Trade-In for Store Credit

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I only deal with the shipping manger when it comes to buying and trading fish back ..
I had two stores that i ordered from and they knew from the hop that they would get them back in a year.
so i always gave 3 months notice before bringing them in i've gotten 50% of the original price back on most deals

Wow, speaking of resurrecting a thread :)

I am in kansas city area too...missouri side...I have asked around and no one will take fish back...

Welcome to MFK!!! I see nothing has changed since June. Indeed, I rather gave my fish to an interested fellow MFKer (rottbo) than donating them to an LFS. That included a decent car trip, but it was fun, and I know that these guys have a good home now.

Not giving my business to that LFS won't work: I only buy fish there (supplies from the internet), and my fish tend to last long ... fortunately. :)

I understand both sides of this discussion. Generally, stores do not make the killing people assume they do on fish, so money shouldn't play into it. Besides, when a customer must trade in a fish they can no longer house properly I feel they lose the moral high ground. If they got into this hobby to make money they picked the wrong hobby! If an individual is discouraged that a LFS will not give them the credit/payment they think the fish is worth just remember it is a hobby and there are NO guarantees that a fish you think is worth money is worth the same to other hobbyists. Certainly there are some crummy stores with crummy employees out to rape your wallet - but this is (contrary to popular opinion) the exception, not the rule. Also important to the discussion is available tank space. Some stores may need that space for fish that will "move" faster.

On the other hand, the good will gained by taking in fish is certainly more than worth any diminished profit for the store. I encourage most customers to attempt to sell their fish in the newspaper or on-line communities. Sadly, I have seen only one customer care enough to do so. They generally just want to get rid of the fish the easiest way - the LFS.

My lfs accepts trade and offers 1/3 credit.

aquariums etc on 76th and state accepts tradein as well as a little store on 14th and central although he has nice saltwater but as far as freashwater he lacks oddball fish but nice fella and sells tanks pretty cheap called the fishtank

I don't know about KC,
but everywhere I have been, some places do accept trade ins, and most will accept donations.. today I tried to trade a fish in to a place where I paid 20.00 for the fish at 4-6" paid 20.00, and they offered me 8.00 store credit when its now 13".. I was like, no tanks, I'll use it as fertilizer before I do that...
best of luck!

unfortunately the lfs closest to me (the one I go to most) tries to horde any nice trade ins they can get.If I ask how much they want for it they usually snap "its not for sale, its going to be a display fish!" :screwy:

Later I come into the store and the "display fish" is gone.I ask where it is and am always met with the same response "oh I had some guy that kept asking for it so I sold it.":irked:

Now if somebody tells me something is not for sale then out of respect I dont push the subject, and being put into a position where I have to get on the LFS owners nerves by being a whiny sniveling **** or else not get the good deals really ticks me off.

so theres my rant on the trade in situation with my LFS.thanks for letting me get that out. ;)

Ok guys, go onto TFDfish.com and look at their price list. Now look at what you pay in the store. See the mark up? Ok, now take that percentage and multiply it by what you think your fish is worth. That is what you fish is worth when s LFS offers to take a trade in. To them, they are buying a fish to make a profit, so they aren't going to give you full or even half price on a monster because they will lose money.

I was talking to the guy at my LFS and they sell everything for ATLEAST double what they pay for it...
