Trade-In for Store Credit

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The way I do it is b/c I know the people on the inside so I get mad at them if they dont let us trade for another cool fish, so it usually works. Then again I talk to the lfs people alot. o__o

I work at a fish store, and there are some risks that a store takes when "buying" fish of independents. I'm sure you can understand them, but the most important thing is, if something does happen the store has no guarantee on the fish. With a wholesaler, they do, so the store kind of does feel like they are doing you a favor by taking it.

I disagree with that statement. From wholesalers they often only get a 24 hour guarantee, which they can institute upon taking the fish.

Harley,

This is how I went about it... The closes LFS to me at first would not give me any credit for fish, even though I spent hundreds there monthly, sometimes thousands. When they refused to give credit, I stopped shopping with them for a couple of weeks, and when I went back I asked them if they would take the fish for store credit and they did. I wasn't trying to press them, but there were other stores that would at least give a helping hand.

Good Idea WyldFya! Luckily the only time I had to trade in my two 18" cats and three 6" sunnies, one of the employees of the LFS that was family run said he would take everything but one of the catfish. Even though they had many signs saying no trade ins for credit, they knocked a few dollars off the stuff I bought as I was leaving the store. The other LFS I go to will knock the price down just because I am there so much.

yes you get ripped off many times at lfs trad ins ...you do know a fish the seel for 80's they only pay between 19 and 25 dollars ...your getting ripped off there as well

Ironically, just about the only thing that I buy from LFS are trade in fish...and there's one by me that takes them. They pay 50% in credit or 30% cash. Sometimes they're shady about what they pay and I call them on it...and other times I benefit from their extravagant prices (that's when I don't care that they sell 7" green terrors for $50 :)

There's a big difference between trading in a bunch of beat to crap oscars with hole in the head or 14" pacus, etc. and quality angels, africans that they can't get from wholesalers, breeding pairs, etc.

Not shopping at LFS that treat you bad (and telling your friends to do the same) is the worst thing that you can do to a LFS. LFS that care about loyal, dedicated hobbyist customers treat people who spend a lot of money there better than random people off the street.

Almost all the LFS store take fish in for store credit in the Sacramento CA area, so this is a rare problem for fish keepers in the area. If your in a similar situation again, try putting an add on the pets section of craigslist. There you can get cash and do what you want with the$. I got 2 Grn Sevs (about 3inch), a gold Sev (about 2.5 inch), and a 5 inch Grn Terror for $30 from a guy on Craigslist. Normally the Sevs would have cost anywere from $5 to $12 each and the Grn Terror $20 to $45 each. So in the end we were both happy, including the fish. :)
