Trading in fish for cash or store credit.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sell fish too often on mFK (in huge quantities), and you will be asked to pay a vendor fee.
Didn’t know that. Thanks for the tip!

BUMP for a reminder of the community rules. If you are selling for-profit, then you need to register as a vendor. Should you choose to attempt to sell under the radar, you risk losing access to the MFK Marketplace and/or MFK in total.

Hi all. Simple question. How much can I expect when trading in fish for store credit or cash. Someone told me 20 percent of what you bought it for or its retail price. Is that accurate?
I’d say between 0-20%
Many stores will just take fish off your hands like they’re doing you some sort of favor, but I’ve found a few in my area that pay 20% and one that will go up to 50% depending on the fish

Should be fine based on the store, age, and color.

I have ~30 bosemanni rainbows ~2" in a 75g that I need to thin out, as they are growing fast. I just called my local place, the "good" LFS that I know of nearby, and they would not even want to look at my fish or take them, nothing.
Anybody local interested? I would trade for plants, fish, stuff, or let go social distance and all. I could be interested in cories, otos, silver dollars, who knows.

I tried to sell some fry from my old RTM pair to my LFS, the owner said they don't usually buy fish from customers because they get them so cheap from Segrest so he offered to give me fish food. I returned a pleco to another LFS and 2 tinfoil barbs to Petsmart that were getting harassed to death, the managers were visibly annoyed with the employee that offered me a full refund in both instances.

The amount given depends on the fish and the shop of course and most places will only give store credit....while we are at it, most stores that I have dealt with do not want to take in fish that customers bring in for whatever reason.
I worked in a shop years ago and that was the attitude of the owner as well as other shops in the area.

Most that I’ve seen have separate tanks for trade ins so they don’t introduce diseases into their system
