is it that,, its a bit more dangerous to use the sand as a substrate as a whole....

i think you are not reading the replies properly, no one said that it was dangerous to use sand as a substrate but when you did that mass change up of your substrate you messed up you BB in the tank. i have the same white sand since 3 years in all my tanks and many members have some or other type of sand in their tanks..its not the sand its the way you added it to your tank might have killed your fish
 
You can always use sand but not aragonite or anything that have a crushed sea shells since they will raise your ph and it is ot favorable to an arowana.
Next time you are planning on changing substrate, make it gradually even a well established tank will have an amonia spike if you suddenly disturbed the bacterias under your substrate.
