Transforming a acrylic display into aaquarium...., need some suggestions...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have the best way. No one (that I know of) makes anything specifically for filling holes in acrylic. You can use clear quick set epoxy but it turns yellow in prolonged sunlight. I have used it to repair chipped glass tanks.

Thanks...... I guess Ill just do what i said......,

I thought I may have read about a Weldon product that was basically what I would be making....., but wasn't exactly sure.....

Like I said the hardest part is going to be keeping air bubbles out of the disolved acrylic......., you almost always have to stir it to get it to disolve quickly/evenly....., and when you draw into the syringe it usually gets some air bubbles as well....

After I fill the holes I wonder what would be the best way to get it smooth/flush with the surface..... do you thinkk I will have to sand and buff it to make it look decent???? or will gravity allow it to level to a point that is acceptable???

Thanks again......

If you are not going to laminate the sides, tape a piece of glass over the area with the holes. That will take care of one side; let gravity take care of the other side. You won't get perfection, but it will look decent.

why not just use it as a bio ball tower and get a really big tank?

I plan on getting a big tank at some point but this tank is going to hold me over until I have the money..... plus I want to have a bunch of tanks anyway....

Make a few holes in the divider for travel between two sides. how far from open side is the small holes? Maybe an idea would be to shorten the tank to this point so you don't have to struggle with the small holes (more holes = more potential leaks)

Also the bigger holes can be used for connecting pipes for input & output. I would flow water from left to right in the one side and revers on the other side.

But I would let this tank stand and run for a month or so and measure it regularly (especially in tee middle) to see if is buckleing anywhere.

I plan on removing the center divider completely...... I will probably leave about a half inch othe the top and bottom though, just to make it a little more rigid...... As far as shortening the length of the aquarium..., I thought about it a few times but kept coming back to the idea of just filling the wholes..... The exisiting edge is perfect and I dont think it will be that hard to fill the wholes as I will be laminating those sides with 1/8" acrylic so it atleast wont leak......

thanks for the comments....

Im still a little busy right now....., im probably going to be moving shortly so I may have to wait a bit more...., we'll see...
