transporting a big RTC

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been doing a fish rescue in memphis for about a year now. Too many monsters in small tanks. I haven't had many catfish over the 12" mark but i have had a few 20+" pacus. I bought a 50g igloo cooler from walmart and just moved 3 18" Albino channel cats and they made the 4 hour trip around memphis while i made all my stops. I added a 40 Whisper air pump and all went well. I may look into that

Did you move the pacu in the same way? We are moving to Germany and have a 20hr drive! Gonna take a big trailer though, and let them swim behind the boat to stretch their fins...

I don't know what you guys in the UK do with flasks... but here we save them for our booze ;) :grinno:

it's harder to control the temp when you do that though and 3-4hours is along time to try to fiddle with water temps... I have a small 50watt heater that I use in the car... I have brought fish from 12 hours of driving in weather that was easily -40 at points with the fish in the unheated trunk with no problems with that setup :D

 seems like we have the same idea for our flasks

Yep, same cooler. I don't know about a 20h trip but if you must, starve the fish for a few days, maybe even a week. Use fresh clean water, large air pump and maybe even some API Ammo Lock just in case.

Or.... put a sponge filter in their current tank to seed it and then use that in their travel container, I can't remember who it was that moved their fish across the states with this method. That way if you stop over at a hotel or run into problems with traffic then your still good ;)

Thats a good Idea too.
I saw your redtail and was very tempted to take him for my pond. I just didnt know where you were in Jersey.

The fish is still available. I live near the George Washington Bridge in NJ.

BTW...I'm hooked onto this site now.

"Bump" is just a way of "bumping" a thread to the top of the list... people do it to keep interest in their or someone elses threads
