Treating Hexamita aka Spironucleus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Metronidazole should not be used long term, as it has proven to cause organ damage in fish. (see initial post) Also, Metro applied via feed should only be done based on the fishes weight. Dr. Edward J Noga suggests 25 mg/Kg of body weight/day for 5 to 10 days, or 100 mg/kg of body weight for 3 days. Retreat once if required.

I'm personally not convinced that this is a case of spironucleus (internal parasites), but possibly a bacterial infection, to which I would agree with Tom (Aquanero) - try a round of Kanamycin. (Kanaplex)

I will. I'll do another big water chance today and see if I can find Kanamycin. Thanks for your quick help. It makes sense. The met. has done nothing. I bought two 500 gram bottles, too! I'll repost if it works. I hope it's not too late. In the future, how can I tell if I have a parasitic or bacterial infection? The symptoms look similar and everything I've read seems like trial and error...In my case, an extended treatment with met had NO effect, so now it must be bacterial?

Hey RD my ebjd juvy who is around 1.5 to 2 inches has now had hex symptoms for 6 days. I used metro from tetra parasite guard and tried force feeding with epsom salt in water in a 10ml syringe but he keeps spitting it out even after 30 seconds. I placed the syringe in the mouth passed the gill plates and injected slowly. Afraid to go any deeper without hurting such a small fish. Still pooping white. I havent tried a epsom bath yet. Currently in a 20 gallon hospital tank how should i go about using epsom for a salt bath for my EBJD

Epsom baths generally only work for constipation, it's not the same as the fish actually ingesting the solution.

hey RD i treat my FH with Magnesium sulphate with soaked pallets, from first day the white poop stopped coming out, i continued the treatment on third day whit poop start coming out with his waste and still coming, yesterday was the 5th day of his treatment, what to do now?? he still eating.... i want to cure him before he lost his appetite.. help!!

It's quite possible that your fish has worms, which will require treating with a deworming agent.

See post #11 (as well as others) in this discussion regarding the treatment of worms.
