Treating Ich

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The oscar will be fine, hun. Salt can remove slime coat for a moment but it should be restored once the fish gains its composure after trying to adapt to the saline level. I observe that with my goldfish whenever I use salt to battle ich. They shed their slime coat but were able to restore it eventually.

Doesn't matter if table salt is iodized or not. Bottom line, as long as it is NaCl, it's fine.

Thank you for all of your advice!
Well, this morning the fish all seem happier already which was really positive.

Did the second dose of salt this morning...

I've discovered it is a pain in the bottom to try disolving 120 tsp of salt!

Thanks Lupin - its the first disease that seems to have broken out in my tank, so I'm a bit in panic.

I keep:
2x Oscars
2x Carpinte
2x JD

They are in a 120g tank.

Adimitedly I have not been the best at tank maintenace recently due to lots of personal things going on. So... another thing to the long list! *sigh*

I'll make sure to start tonight and do a large w/c (would that help at all?) raise the temp in the tank and hopefully I can get to the pet store in time after work to get aquarium salt ... if not how can I tide over till the weekend?

But we know Ich doesn't lie dormant in tanks...so what have you added recently as it needs to come from a host...

Thanks for your post SteveR....

I had to give up my tank about a month ago now.
In the end all fish were healed, it was some kind of fungus which only affected my two carpintes in the end.

I treated the entire tank and then about a month later they are doing fine. But at that point I had to give up my tank :(

I have 2 different ick meds and I'm looking for an opinion on whats better. I have quick cure by ap pro , and super ick cure by api. The quick cure has malachite green and formalin as ingrediants.

Super ick cure has malachite green and nitrofurazone as ingrediants.

As of now my tank temp is 84 and I have approx 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt for every 10 gallons of water in my 55. I don't want to do the whole salt treatment thing.

How long should I treat with either med.

Why don't you want to use salt? A tablespoon per 10g is VERY inadequate. You risk creating salt-resistant strains of ich for that dose. Use a teaspoon per gallon and increase it gradually per the instructions in one of the disease sticky threads here.

I rather just use the medication. I don't want to load up on salt. I have 2 plecos and from what I understand they can't take salt.
