Treating inflammation on poly's tail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok, i didnt find maracyn 1 and 2. i did find erythromycin, furan and thiple sulfa. i also bought a test kit. setting up the quarantine tank as we speak.

assuming ph is low, which med should i try first?
assuming ph is high, which med should i try first?

Thank you!

Ok, my water (q tank) test show zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrate around 20, ph 6-6.5, kh 40 and gh 120-180. Should i go ahead and try furan 2? Erythromycin? Or both?

Your water is perfect for the Furan 2 to give maximum effectivness. Treat with the Furan 2 as per instructions on the package. If you don't see any signs of improvement in the next 4 days after you start treatment repost and we'll have to try somthing else.

Erythromycin is mostly gram positive which makes it very hard on BB while most of the infections that we see are gram negative, so this would not be the 1st choice as it's spectrum is very narrow in relation to its gram negative effectivness.

at the start of the fourth day, it's hard to tell due to the discolored water, but the inflammation seems to have gone down a bit. do I go for another round of furan - 2 treatment?

If you think you are seeing an improvement and it appears to be helping you could do another round. Remember Furan 2 is not absorbed so it is only effective on surface conditions. But yes if you are seeing improvement you can do another round with no problem, somtimes these can be diffacult to clear up and two rounds are needed.

In that case it may just be my imagination. The inflammation seems to be internal in nature (no open wound or sores as far as i can tell). do you have any other meds to suggest? Im in the philippines so my options are rather limited. It would actually be easier if the med was for humans.

I thought the Furan 2 would be the better choice considering your water perameters. How ever since you have the 3X sulfa you can use it. Do a 50% water change run some carbon for 24 hours and treat as per package instructions. Your water so not so far out of spec for the 3X sulfa the it will not be effective and might just get this as it is a good choice for septic infections.

The final option I can offer, if Neomycin is available to you, you can try it. It is best fed to the fish by soaking food for about 20 mins. To prepare fish food, use enough Neomycin to treat 5 gallons of water. Use just enough water to mix fish food and Neomycin. After soaking, pour entire contents into aquarium.

I'm really an expert as far as what meds are available to you so I can only be of limited help in that area.

Update: after five days of triple sulfa treatment, the reddishness seems to have gone down, but the swelling is still present. Will continue triple sulfa treatment and see how it goes.
