Treating inflammation on poly's tail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi, just an update. After 2 rounds of triple sulfa, the fish was still unwell. I then tried kanamycin. After a few days after the end of the first round of kanamycin, the fish released a very large amount of poo (looked pretty dense too) that was infested with small red worms (looked a bit like bloodworms). This was even after 2 separate rounds (each round composed of 2 dosages each) of parasiteguard (full dose).

The swelling seems to be gone, so it may have been a combination of constipation plus internal parasites, rather than an internal infection.

So the kanamycin pluse the parasiteguard worked?

Im not sure the parasiteguard worked, since it went through one round of it at full dosage (2 doses) before i even posted here. It may have been coincidental that the expelling happened a week after the second round of parasiteguard. The kanamycin 'worked' in the sense that it was the last medication ive been trying out on this bichir, but i dont know how an antibiotic would cause a bichir to a) loosen its bowels or b) expel parasites.

Kanamycin is absorbed by the intestines and can have a laxative effect. So it is easy to see how this could happen. The paraguard could have paralyzed them and the Kana flushed them from the intestines. At any rate I'm glad you were able to get the Kanamycin it is a great med for alot of fish issues.

I ordered kanamycin online and had a friend staying in the us ship it to me. Before it arrived a local distributor started carrying it, so justcbought locally. Im still waiting for the overseas package. :)
Here's hoping everything's ok already with the fish so that i can return him to a bigger tank already. Thanks for all the help!
