  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Idk hognose just creep me out lol. But I am deffinatly thinking about diamonds and rainbows. I have always wanted a rainbow.... How hard are those two to take care of. I mean I can pretty much handle anything just wondering.

Don't forget about vine snakes....they are stringy little things, but can be set up in really nice, well-lit tanks with live plants and if I'm not mistaken, can be kept in groups without any major issues.

I've never kept them personally, but saw some really cool setups at the pet store I used to work at, and some of our customers seemed to really enjoy them.

I looked into rainbows and carpets for a long time thinking as one for my next snake until I got the hognose (cutest snake on earth btw), so I know a good amount about them.

They are great snakes both for handling and display, and (both) can be baught from 75-150 dollars depending on subspecies. I can give you links to check out if you want a good breeder.

most vinesnakes have a hard time adjusting to mice... so you might want to reconsider if you dont like feeding anoles.

That and they aren't very handable snakes. Rainbow boas are reasonably easy IMO, correct temperature and correct humidity is all thats needed. Set up the enclosure first, if you can get the conditions right, it will do fine. One of the most important things is not too hot. Anything over 90 degrees is highly dangerous and often results in a dead snake.

Carpets make great pets. They're snappy babies but tame down well if you handle them once in a while. Very easy to keep....keep them in the 80s to low 90s and spray the cage when they're about to shed.

I don't know how much you've looked into this, but pure diamond pythons are pretty expensive snakes, usually around $1000 from what I've seen. You can get a nice normal jungle, IJ, or coastal for $200 or less.

  1. i had a pair of gtp and could handle both but they are more head shy than most.I can say that one of them was very melow like holding a rtb but the other was always on aleart, still neither ever struck while being held,i could never reach in the cage without a hook.they would stalk my hand like a mouse.
  2. dr house mentioned the island tree boas,i had one and they do look diferent but it was tame and i loved its look, climbed alot too.One day i will get another but you know how that goes.
  3. the green vines i had would always put up a front with open mouth or it would musk on me,if they get down its like a green roadrunner.still cool display snakes,i just think you want to handle something more.
  4. the only carpets ive been around wich is about 5 or 6 of them would strike. No it was not the same owner, this does not mean that they all do obviously ppl on here have diferent exp.I love them too and want one some day so if i keep hearing they can be more tame then cool. They look very much like a gtp in the head and the jungles are mind blowing.
  5. this is why we end up with so many herps, not to many have it all so we end up buying them all, lol.gtp for looks, bps to hold.good luck.
  6. last note, brazil rainbows need the climate very close.i had a pain trying to keep it warm enough and humidity right for good sheds and feeding, digesting you know, mine bit like a uzi so i traded it.that was long ago and the new owners said it bit all the time too.
  7. look into the solomon island tree but know their is a grownd dweller too, mine was an aboreal one that was sold to me as a ground.i almost streesed it to death with nothing to climb on.good luck.

Solomon Island boas are awesome. I love the solomon island ground boa, and the dwarf tree boa.

Not trying to force the Solomon Island boas or anything, but here's a caresheet I wrote on them a while back: http://www.herpfamily.com/HerpFamily/docs/Pacific Tree Boas.html

  1. Might help differentiate between the various species.
