my 2 cents are a trimac. He might be a little small to tell sex, but the best method is a spot on the dorsal fin means its a female

Do you have any example of this? When I got him he was the dominant fish in the tank, largest, most colorful.

here is a picture of an old female, its hard to see but you can see the black spot on the dorsal fin. normally if it was the largest one and dominant one, its probably a male

I can see it in yours and i saw a few pictures a minute ago. Measured him and hes almost 2.5". Can I safely say its probably male? I see no indication of black, plus his fins are more pointed.

yep... safe to say. but doesn't mean it not a really really low grade flowerhorn

True but I hope thats not the case. I have heard good things about Wetspot. They have a nice store and its a great operation. They know how to sell fish and make profit but at the same time be all about the fish. They have like at least 10 tanks for display only that aren't for sale.

The first picture I posted yesterday is a female at about 2.25" the dark spot is clearly visable on the dorsal fin.

To the OP the newer pictures you took show the colors of your fish much bettr.

I'm 99% sure I have a male, wouldn't being over a darker substrate increase the black if it was there?
