I wanted to add one more fish to my 300 gallon and I was thinking either a small trimac or red devil, as the "boss" fishWhich one should I choose? By the way, there are plenty of hiding spots in the tank in case the crap hits the fan

I can personally say that a male Trimac can't be beat color-wise. They have a wide range of colors on their body, and the more the male grows the more these colors show. You would also appreciate the nice finnage that develops at adult age. Here is my current male at 7":

When you say RD, are you talking about the garden variety petsmart-RD, or the pure ones? If its a pure RD, I think its a more personal choice, though looks wise I don't prefer the Angelina Jolie look (i.e., the lips), but thats just me :) I have never kept either RD or Midas, though I have gathered that they are almost always very interactive and many times glass bangers, if that is something you are looking at. Trimacs would be quite shy at the beginning, but would later (as they grow) be interactive as well.

Do you want more colors in the tank? If so, Tris should be your choice.

I'd go with the trimac because they are not as common, and I feel more interesting than a Red Devil (esp. if it is just a typical hobby RD/Midas)

I agree with some of the above posts. Trimacs are much cooler bc they are not as common. Just make sure you get a real trimac. Availible from Ken at FishFarm or Jeff Rapps at TUIC.

go with a mac-the red devil will kill everything in the tank and youll be left with just the devil.theyre beautiful but nasty and ive had many.they always cleaned out my tanks within a few months of anything else living.the only thing is you may get lucky with a 300 gallon tank but thats the risk.

A trimac can be just as nasty as a devil. It's just a matter of which one you like better.

Go Red Devil, Trimacs are bland and ugly.

lol, you know both fish are interesting, and both fish are about as bland really.

I think a nice Midas might be what you're looking for...

Maybe those Chanco that were all the rage when I quit about a year ago (Basically a Midas/RD that gets past 16" or so)

Nice fish with a brute body.

i would personaly go with wild cought R/D tangled up in cichlids has them on his list the pic he has looks swweet I want a pair bad just no room big old fat lips on them

Thanx everyone for the replies.
How much does a small size pure trimac usually cost? (This could be a deciding factor...)
