Trimacs in a 75?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Trimacs will be fine in a 75 for at least a year or two as a pair and maybe up to 3 years for single specimen. A 120-125 is more ideal for permanent. I say get a small group and grow them out in 75 and keep a small pair. But keep in mind that they can and may be rough on each other and as they mature and grow the chances of the male killing the female increases. So you might end up with a show male in the long run:) plus they are very hardy fish too. I've got a small pair in a 75 now as well and they're doing fine

If you are looking to do a single trimac a 75g should be fine. I myself wouldnt go any smaller than a 125g for a pair of trimacs.

Doh! freshwaterpredators beat me!

Trimacs are potentially one of the meanest CA fish. Males, unfortunately for you can reach Bull Midas size or bigger 12-13". Females, however stay much close to the 7-9" range till they hit 1.5yr then can push 9-11 max.

You cannot keep two females . A Male and female could work with a divider but you ideally need the 6' length to let them swim freely and together. Still a divider can be needed. So either 1 male or plan to have a divider ready in all likelihood.

There is a good chance you cannot keep much with the female Trimac either in a 75. You could mate her with a smaller Male CA Cuban,Dempsey, Tex, or something but you don't wanna to go down the hybrid route in most cases. Male Trimacs get to bulky for a 4' tank with a female, everything could be fine for a year, then one morning you'll wake up to a shredded female =(

Thanks for all the help guys! I've just been looking at different options, any suggestions on what to put? I want something that gets pretty big, but I don't really want an Oscar or a JD, any thoughts?

A 75 should be fine for 2 trimacs as long as they stay under a foot. It might bring out their aggression though being in that size of a tank. One would definitely be fine in it. Make sure you have good filtration because they are messy.

Jaguar and Red Devil/Midas are nice fish that would fit in there. It might bug some people but flowerhorns are what ive come to like. If you get a good one they can be really nice to look at, stay under a foot and they have that tank busting personality.
