trimacs or flowerhorns?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
trimac.

looks like a low grade flowerhorn too me.
Tri= 3
so 3 spot, and thre both have more than 3 spots.

This is the problem with hybrids in the hobby, the fish is obviously a hybrid, is even labled as such and a bunch of people say it's a trimac on the forums so it must be, that's insane, damn thing is a $180 piece of garbage. I doubt many of you have ever seen a pure trimac because most of the fish currently being sold are not timacs but flowerhorn rejects being passed as trimacs. This is a real trimac http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery.php?genus=Amphilophus Ken

Thanks for the uh help ken, but was there anything other than the stated reason for not thinking its genuine? like anything about it's appearance or number, size and shape of spots, pearling etc. I also must point out that the real trimac in the link has 5 spots (?) In person the $180 piece of garbage was actually a beautiful, healthy, intelligent looking fish..
Thanks for the help everyone

Well. It actually seems to me ken that the real problem in the hobby today is that the older more experienced fishkeepers like to rant about how something is 'definately 100%' something or not something and how stupid is everyone who thinks otherwise, yet when quizzed themselves cannot provide a good reason for their belief least of all pass on their knowledge to the newer hobbyists to prevent them from being tricked into buying the wrong fish...

WOW. Kinda harsh Id say.:irked: A piece of garbage?:eek: Hope nobody here wants to or was considering buying it:(... Kind of ruff to hear/read that... And to say " I doubt many of you have ever seen a pure trimac".

I actually come to this place to gain knowledge from the people that don't know what a TRUE Trimac is.... Now who do I trust and believe??:shakehead

When you post a flowerhorn in the Central American section and it's being sold as a flowerhorn and a bunch of people claim it's a trimac it's obvious they don't know what one looks like. I'm going to say something. In my opinion no fish, either a Trimac or any hybrid is worth $180, A nice adult trimac might set you back $50 retail. My problem is people just decide what something is, then bred it, sell the fry as pure fish and we get more diluted genes in the hobby, a wild adult Timaculatum is an awsum fish, this is not one. Ken

Got to say I kind of agree with Ken. I don't keep trimacs or flowerhorns. The fish is labled as a flowerhorn! Why would you think it's not a flowerhorn? Too often on this site people want a fish ID or sexed and everyone chimes in that either hasn't kept the fish or is simply guessing. If you haven't kept true trimacs from a reputable dealer why are you commenting on what it is? You are only leading to more confusion (this is certainly not directed at anyone that is currently keeping these fish that has answered). If you want a trimac order it from Ken or Jeff or some of the other reputable dealers and you'll have a lovely fish. I think both fish pictured look great (the price is rediculous, but I guess if it's rare and you want it you have to do what you have to do), but you should assume they are flowerhorns unless you can absolutely prove otherwise. No amount of message board guessing is going to let you know it's true bloodlines.

I think the fish you purchased is going to be a real beauty!!!

If you notice, he simply put a question mark at the end of the title. Implying that he was unsure of what it may be... Maybe he should have posted in the FH section! At least if it turned out to be a Trimac they would have said hey Trimac, very cool... Not post in the CA section... Price is rediculous but were not buying it. Not our concern... I do agree that there are some people that are out to make a dollar for a highly sought fish. I absolutley love a true Trimac for sure! Thought about getting one from you! LOL

Same thing man. He has a question mark at the end of the title... Meaning hey does anyone know what breed this is?? On the internet forum here that we ALL get on and par-take in the love and hobby, we always seek advise from fellow members for anything. Sexing a fish on the internet with pix that usually are not so great makes it hard for pretty much anyones guess.That would mean no one would say anything. Id rather have them guess. Makes it more fun anyway.

This statement is what keeps me from answering the ID threads, If I can't be 100% sure on the ID I don't say anything; and, the first question I ask myself "have I owned one of those?"
