Tropheus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Two thoughts:

1) Moliro are very aggressive and no matter whom you listen to, you will probably end up losing all but one. Read up on this species before buying them.

2) You should only feed tropheus once a day. Otherwise your water quality will suffer, and tropheus need crystal clear water.

Get a 75g and overstock. Tropheus are extremely aggressive, from what I've seen at least. Mbuna is as aggressive as I can handle. :P Tropheus look awesome though. Good luck.

Chris two things for feedings....

One, make sure that you have algae growing. Tropheus are grazers and will eat all day. I have even added plastic plants so that algae grows on them for the T's to feed on.
I feed my T's 2 or 3 times per day...they need it.
Like most Cichlids over-filtration is the best...10x turn over per hour.
My tank-raised T's get a 50% water change once per week, and my Wild Caught T's 33% every 5 days.

There's not much margin for error with Tropheus.

I bought a colony of 8 kaisers (way too small), they were in a 6ft 500ltr tank. The colony quickly imploded. I am left with Two. A valuable and expensive lesson learned.

Do not put that colony in a 30 gal tank, they require lots of space.

Fischfan13, I am glad you brought up water changes because I was thinking of doing a 1/3 of a water change daily. i used to do that with my cichlids in my old 75g, but was wondering if it would be necessary to do that with the 30g?

Eh, I don't think a 30 will host that many trophs.
i agree with M2!!!! Tropheus are very aggressive already,30gl. is to small more that many fish, they are going kill one anther....... as they get bigger...good luck buddy i like Troph's my second favorite next to Frontosa.

30g is good size for growing up juveniles under 2"
I used to keep all tropeus in my tanks, and tried 30g with no luck
IMO 55g long tank is the minimum for a group of 15.....

I lost at least half of my 1.5" fry keeping them in a 30G. They were just too aggressive to be in that small of an area. Things were fine once I put them in a 125, even after I added more.
