Tropical and Native Fish Compatibility

One other thing, a mixed community is perhaps the most difficult tank to build and maintain, because of there being so many variables, the more different fish you add, the more variables. So take your time...

I've found my best community set ups focuses the task on groups of fish, like a group of cory cats, and a group of angel fish, plus a group of tetras, then one port-hole cat for some spice.. perhaps a fancy pleco... you see? If you keep a few small groups with a single stand out, things get easier.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm still deciding which of the 2 or 3 good options to go with but when I have decided in a day or two I will make a new thread for that as well.

I have a 10" bullhead and he wont eat any other fish. I've kept goldfish from my outdoor pond in his tank with no issues of him eating them. The only thing is that I wouldn't keep a bullhead for life in a four foot tank. They are surprising very fast when spooked and will hit the glass very hard.

I used to have a bullhead that won't eat any fish so I kept him with the guppies and other small fishes....but that's just 1% of bullhead population. The other 99% will gladly eating fish like candy.

Does anyone think it is possible (in the case that I dropped one of my other catfish) that I could get a dwarf goonch "bagarius Bagarius". Saw one for the first time today and fell in love with it. My LFS can also get me one if I want which is a rarity among fish stores. What I saw from planetcatfish is they only get 8-10 in. And again I am talking about the DWARF goonch not the one you see on river monsters. Or another one that I had my eye on was a jello band or bolt catfish. I hear those are pretty rare as well.

That may be what I go with since my angelfish are starting to get to large for my 30 tall. And there are some porthole catfish in my LFS which I thought about getting for a schooling cat but I think you need at least three not just one right? Not questioning you just wondering.

Thanks. You have been very helpful I am either getting the fish tomorrow or Saturday so keep an eye out for the new thread. Oh but one last thing. Are portholes very hardy. If they are I will use some to help cycle the tank. I will be very careful not to hurt the fish and do water changes twice a week. I also am adding fritz zyme to accelerate the process.

While they can be hardy once settled into a tank, i would never put them on a list to cycle a tank. In fact, a fishless cycle is my preference. Just add some used filter media to you new media. Some used gravel to a new gravel bed. etc.
