Tropical Fish Distributors online closing up shop

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I am from Ohio and I will answer a few questions that have been asked.
1) It can get hot here, but the reason the temp was at 80 in tfd is it is cheaper to do that than run individual heaters.
2) As far as buying it depends. I called him once and he said I was too close, however there have been people that have bought from him that were almost as close as me. I know the few who did were at the 200 dollar minimum or they got individual fish from aquabid where he also sold. However for the rest of you who ordered with out problems (I see El Paso being one of the location of one of them) there is no problems with him selling there since he doesn't supply there he wasn't shooting himself in the foot in that case.
3) Most stores around here were supplied by TFD and some in PA as well (unless they went through Buffalo). I know this because I saw the boxes come in and I do talk to store owners.
4) As far as what is left in Ohio there still are stores that don't use them as a supplier. Also, there is a new store (which I have not visited yet) that said they may try to fill the void of a local distributor as I exchanged a few emails with the owner. Their name is aqua-cyrlic.
Here is their website. If you plan on visiting them, best call before hand as they are not officially open to the public yet.

I had only one experience with tfd, and Joe was really nice to me on the phone, and sent fish to me when my lfs (which he supplied) closed up shop. Some of the stores would not talk highly of tropical fish distributors in my area, and would go through a buffalo distributor, but I think it also had to do with other factors other than customer service.
Cleveland store owners could hand pick fish, and the stores out my way would get the remaining leftovers, and that didn't really sit as well. The stores in my area could also get the same fish species a little larger, from buffalo and it made them easier to sell to a customer.
They will be missed by many, who had joy when they got their fish from tfd, in 40 years of service.
I remember I was excited when I opened my box from Joe, and happy with what I got.
It sucks losing a distributor, he got in some oddballs from time to time over the years too.

I don't know how it is in other states but I know in northeast ohio the little mom and pop fish stores that i got a lot of predatory fish from and tfd are going out of business and it sucks. I don't have a ton of money to pay the shipping costs to buy fish online but it seems like the hobby is really dying down. Anyone have any recommendations on places in ohio to go?

Try RMS in Middleburg hts. or Jurrasic Aquatics in Mayfield.

Confirmed. Their site/shop is no longer live. Too bad. I wasn't able to read the whole replies. What was the reason again for the shop to close?

The old man had a stroke a while back & imagine that coupled with a tanking industry (pun intended) had something to do with it. Suppliers are dropping like flies right now and it doesn't appear to be letting up anytime soon either. Unfortunate.

My buddy and I got a lot of good stuff from them right before packing up shop though! Joe was a cool guy.

Yeah, I was able to put together an order for a few hundred bucks before I knew they were going OOB. Once I heard they were I tried to put together one last order but was unable to in time. I do have TFD to thank for my three Royal plecos which are large and healthy as can be to this day. For a couple decades I always wanted a royal pleco and for numerous reasons was never able to get a healthy one to have for a while. The longest was a few weeks from a LFS. As long as these guys continue thriving I will always remember where I got them. I got lots of fish from them but those are the unicorn that I always had a hard time attaining.
