Try to add some tin foil barbs to distract the cuban gars so it won't target the smaller trops. If the tin foil barbs get eaten then add more till the trops are at a good size. They do grow fast.

thanks guys, am keeping my fingers crossed too. life has been too hectic to be getting new tanks (might be moving house) so this'll have to do for now...in fact have not spent much time in front of the tank for a long time. ime the cubans leave anything above 12" alone. so the trops just have another 2-3" to go before they're "safe".
It worked when I add my 9-10" shortnose gars to my 26" tropical gar. It did not bother the shortnose and went for the tinfoil barbs. I stopped adding the barbs when the shortnose hit a good size not to be eaten. Tinfoil barbs are cheap and can be use as feeders.
xander - i can definitely understand that outside issues can affect what you can do with your fish, so no argument from me on that issue. you know your individual fish, and although individual personality can only be predicted so well, sometimes you have no choice. good luck. but don't put tinfoil barbs in there by any means...
...which brings me to...

quite frankly, you shouldn't be giving any advice on how to keep gars as your general setup is based on all the exceptions to rules. that's fine that it works for you, but don't give others crappy advice.
first off, we are talking about different species here, CBGs are very different from SNGs which are very different from TPGs...and at various sizes and conditions there are even more differences.
secondly, with the general "silvery fish rule" TFBs are some of the worst things to add...adding "feeders" like this can easily set off the gars (especially large gars) which can lead to broken backs due to spooking or fast starts in pursuit of food, etc. not a good idea with gars. TFBs may be cheap, but replacing your 25" broke-back cuban or other gar is not.
thirdly...well anything else isn't worth the time right now, so i won't even continue--
