Tropical gar kamikaze mission (+ updates on the big cubans)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I tried this in my tank (in fact, I have with smaller [and cheaper] Lep. species) the result would be (and was) about a week or two of peace, and then abrupt aggression against them.

In fact, a small gar around 10-12" managed to lift the thick glass top with weights on it and zero gap to escape the 500g. I found it on the floor and it survived. To this day I'm not sure how it got out of the tank when two foot gars have bounced off the lid without moving it. I think one of the monster gars threw it (its tail was entirely gone and grew back forked).

Be careful Alex! Hopefully your experience goes better than mine -- it doesn't help that my wolf pack is almost evil in their aggressiveness against non-gars.

Man, you got balls. I threw my two 12 inch FLGs in the pond when I first got the Trop(though I did keep one 10 incher(at the time)).
Props man.

Updates pls!

xander - i can definitely understand that outside issues can affect what you can do with your fish, so no argument from me on that issue. you know your individual fish, and although individual personality can only be predicted so well, sometimes you have no choice. good luck. but don't put tinfoil barbs in there by any means...

...which brings me to...

quite frankly, you shouldn't be giving any advice on how to keep gars as your general setup is based on all the exceptions to rules. that's fine that it works for you, but don't give others crappy advice.

first off, we are talking about different species here, CBGs are very different from SNGs which are very different from TPGs...and at various sizes and conditions there are even more differences.

secondly, with the general "silvery fish rule" TFBs are some of the worst things to add...adding "feeders" like this can easily set off the gars (especially large gars) which can lead to broken backs due to spooking or fast starts in pursuit of food, etc. not a good idea with gars. TFBs may be cheap, but replacing your 25" broke-back cuban or other gar is not.

thirdly...well anything else isn't worth the time right now, so i won't even continue--

haha, well, if you know me you'd know i don't enjoy taking risks. so needless to say i've been trying to get permission to get a suitable sized growout tank, and it's finally approved! will be getting a 120gal for the trops & new cuban in the next few days (if nothing goes wrong)

on the downside, the gator gar was eaten/jumped out. eitherways, it's missing now. so all the small gars are in an enclosed 4'x8" section of the tank. feel free to say "i told you so"...everyone has to be put in their place sometimes:)

Naw no-ones really going to say " I told you so"... because you where trying to make the best out of the situation. Glad you corraled 'em off 'n got the thumbs up on the grow-out! Sorry to hear about the Gator. idk how it is tehre.. but here gators are fairly easy to get your hands on yet... the cubs and trops not so much.... Still stinks though =(

Oh and More PICS!

Gators used to be damn common, till the ban came into place. Now I've managed to get another gator so its alright for now.

Placed an order for a set of 120gals today, should be getting it in the coming days!

On a side note, I've possibly got a bonsai trop gar. Haha
