I used about 240 pounds of unwashed Caribsea. Straight from the bag. Added the water over the driftwood to not stir up the sand, but of course it happened anyways from rearranging things and underestimating the return nozzles.
 No wonder its so cloudy, you didn't wash the sand. :grinno:

Nice tank!!

Thanks mate.

The cloudy water will disapeer again, if you do a waterchange it will go faster. You could also add some "Easy-life" water treathment. It helps staring up your filter and get it going.

Good info about the trops

My patience only runs so far. :)

When I added sand the first time, I used a flocculant prior to putting fish in. It worked so fast. However, while many claim these are safe to use WITH fish, I (and many others) are not convinced. If patience runs out completely, I'd pull those beasty kids out of there, throw in some flocculant, do a water change, run some carbon, and throw those babies back into a much clearer tank within 24 hours. Otherwise, lists of big water changes and a bucket load of patience works.

I think I will start with an upped WC schedule and see how that speeds it up. I'm dealing with a 4 foot wide tank here so it's going to take extra long to be able to see straight to the back, I also have two enormous pieces of driftwood which might be adding to the coloration.

i would go with the water changes first as well...of course another issue is that if there is a bacterial component to the cloudiness (which often happens with new tanks) you will be replenishing the "empty space" for them to take over and multiply...sometimes you just have to let it phase out itself (a flocculent for that tank would cost a fortune...i spent a lot just on my 120g back in the day and it didn't really help a ton).

did you heat threat the driftwood? if you just bought it and put it in the tank you will have a loooooooong way to go before it stops leaching tannins into the water. if you did heat treat it first, then there will be slight leaching, but not as much as brand new driftwood.

hopefully a couple big water changes will reduce the cloudiness faster, good luck!--

Yeah. I knew I was going to be waiting forever to get to see the back on my 600 if I waited for it to settle and clear the water since my cats were going to sift throughit and kick it up. Hence the decision for the flocculant. Your gars won't be such a problem there. And yeah. If it's new drift wood, it probably is adding to it. I always soak my big driftwood in a bathtub of hot water multiple times before adding it, though you still get quite a bit of leaching. Well your gars are probably completely comfortable in their veil of privacy. :)
