Troublesome Sunfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like him alot he usually isnt aggresive unless its feeding time but most of my fish go crazy then anyways.

I keep a green in a 55 gallon....by his choice..

I had two other greens in there. RIP. He plays rough.

I also had a crappie and a lmb in there... RIP. These were bigger than he was.

Its been about 6 months since i've kept this fish. I had him when he was about an inch long...He is full grown now at 8in. They grow VERY rapidly but top out quickly. He still is super aggressive.

These monsters are actually more aggressive than central american cichlids in my experience. oscars are wimps. dempseys can be a considerable foe, but the green has proven time and time again (for me) to be the more aggressive. I believe they have been described as the poor man's piranha.

personally, mine eats the scales off other fish. it would own a piranha.

I'll take pics of mine full grown and healthy. They develop some beautiful colors. The dorsal and anal fin develop a black sun pattern and the front fins look like orange/white moths....then of course there are the blue scales and face pattern

Appears to be a Green sunfish to me which is not rare, but the fact that he gained 2 and a half inches in 3 weeks is amazing, he must be getting out of the tank at nite and raiding your fridge. These are nice fish but are always aggressive to some extent. Good luck :naughty:

It probably grew so fast because he kept it in a tropical tank with SAEs and Gouramis. Sunfish will tolerate higher temps, but it will increase their metabolism and shorten their life span
