Trout Question

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I love the color of brookies and they are PA's state fish but I know they love the coldest water possible. I didnt know that tiger trout could tolerate higher temps than brownies so I may look into them they're sweet looking. I figured I would go with a brownie since they can handle up to around 68 degrees. There is a possibility I may be able to get away with no chiller at all but I will need an aerated. Basment temp in the summer is pretty stable and cool and in the winter it gets a few degrees cooler. Current tank in the basement stays around 68-70 degrees.

how big a tank are we planning here just to know? I'd say 75 min for one brookie, 120 for one rainbow, and 180 for one brownie. But then again I've never kept trout, I'm just basing off what I observed on trout streams.

120gal is too small for a single rainbow...depends on the hatchery strains they gets HUGE, easily reach more than 20". Stocked rainbow trout in these streams may be smaller but diet and environment plays the role, not genetics. In fact the same strain of stocked rainbow trout grows bigger in the lake than in these small streams.

That depends on the size of pure parents. Tigers do get larger than brookies but smaller than browns. But most monster tigers were caught in larger rivers and lakes.

Kept a rainbow in a basement tank with aerator, 2 aquaclear 110's and an ehiem canister filter. Did water changes every week. It ate krill, silversides, sticks and feeder goldfish. it can be done without chiller.

I've raised about 10-15 rainbows in a circular tank and the water temp stays In the mid to lower 60's a friend of mine works at a trout farm and there water sometimes gets to 70 in the summer and the rainbows do fine

How large of a tank were you using and how large did they grow? I think I am going to end up getting a brook trout just due to the smaller size

400 hundred gallons they were growing good but i needed the tank for some other fish so they were moved to another tank they were probably 8 inches i got them when they were fry and be careful with the water temp brooks dont tolerate warmer water as well as rainbows do here's a video of the rainbows when they were upgraded to the 400 gallon tank
