DP, correct me if i'm misunderstanding your post but,
Orangehead and Tapajos II are two different types of Geophagus.

Could you post some pictures of your tapajos II (or have you already)? I recently got a 6" "altifrons" but Grey thinks it's tapajos II. Thanks...

Jamie... They are two different fishes, darth pike meant the LFS added "true" to G. "tapajós orange head" to "help" distinguish them from G. sp. "tapajós II" which they also carried.

Nuth... G. "tapajós II" do not have an orange face if that is what you mean. They are reminescent of G. altifrons but have a full-sized abodominal spot and a different tail pattern. I am not familiar with the name you give. I don't think use of "common names" is a good idea, particularly since many of the Geophagus are undescribed, uniformity in their "working names" can eliminate confusion.

Peter... I couldn't find the post where you posted the image of your Geophagus, but I believe I remember it having a regular sized abdominal spot, meaning it is not an altifrons.

Yes, deffinately two differant species and for some reason Tapajos II's are called peachfaces, hence why that store used 'true' for the Tapajos I's ... sadly many places sell Tapajos II's as 'Tapajos Orangeheads' ... which can be very disappointing if you are expecting the colors of say Ed's individuals and the reason I think that particular LFS added the 'true.'

Thanks Ed. Here are some more pictures - what do you think?

And is it a he or a she? :)

Hi Peter,

I can't sex the fish from the pictures and probably couldn't in person without others of similar age to compare it to.

About the I.D., did it come in with the Geophagus "tapajós orange head"? It is not an altifrons and does not have the tail pattern of G. "tapajós II" so it doesn't seem to be from there. I don't think you can make a confident I.D. without knowing where it is from, but it does share many traits of G. abalios. The "paired" bar that runs through the abdominal spot, and the paired anterior bar and three posterior (single) bars, red eyes, tail pattern, straight head profile, and lateral blue and yellow striping are all characteristics of that species. The only obvious dilemma would be how they came in on the same shipment as fish from the Rio Tapajós (being from Venezuela: Rio Orinoco, Rio Cinaruco, Rio Caroni).

Much younger fish (3") but you can compare to these juvenile Geophagus abalios

Thanks for the ID Ed - I've grown more and more suspecious, and now that you mentioned it, it does look a lot like a G. abalios.

It did come in with the G. tapajos and that's why I thought it was G. altifrons Tapajos. It's a mellow fish so I'll probably keep it....just need to find some altifrons now :).

Ed~

Did not mean to offend, I am newer to the Geo/Gymno area after all these years in Tankbusters and Old World, That being said, I hate to derail from the original topic, and for that I am sorry, when I got a group last year of Tapajos II, they where called Geophagus tapajos II "Peachface" and did for sure have a peach hue to the head area, it goes along with the orange/red thing. Again, please forgive my indescresion, as I was just refering to them as what they were sold to me as...

Nuthman~

Hi Nuth,

I didn't mean to come across that way. No worries. I only mentioned it since we were already talking about I.D. troubles. We can't do much about what fish are sold to us as. You have some very nice Geos/Gymnos :)
