If you do continue to go to this LFS, please inform the manager of what 'shop guy' said, and explain why it is bogus. This guy should obviously not be employed in the care and keeping of living things.

If that was directed at my story is more complicated than the obvious fish related problem

oh i forgot to add that some fish do secrete a horomone to help slow down their growth rate in a small environment (oscars and gouramis for sure). but what happens is their head stops growing, and eventually their jaw sortof morphs into the body, they starve and die...

bad juju either way.

fish do not grow to their environment at all.

they grow depending on food and water quality conditions.

in a larger tank, you can feed them more without compromising water quality.

hence, they grow larger.

its not the tank size, its the combo of food and water.

my yellowfinned barbs were a great example of this.

two 2 inch barbs that grew to 18 inches long each in only a 90 gallon tank.

its because I powerfed them and changed water religiously.

and this is what happened:

Sorry I was talking about OP's story

wow 12 volt! ive never seen bigger barbs! they are gorgeous.

to the OP, i forgot to add that while fish do grow throughout their lives, they do reach a point where they slow down as they age.

ive seen some pretty badly stunted oscars (like on craigslist) with tiny heads and big bodies, and they all have had poor diets (living off of feeders), and murky water that has never been tested once. its heartbreaking

it all comes down to researching what fish you want, what their needs and requirements are-and to be the best fishkeeper you can with proper diet, weekly waterchanges (or for some fish like discus more than once a week) and proper tank size.

Well one experience i had was when my friend showed me his 12 in koi in a 10 gallon tank. i couldn't believe my eyes it was real, and after a few weeks of persuasion and his frustration (the fish ate everythin in the tank and destroyed his decorations) he gave me the fish. to give it some relief until summer i put it into my 90g pond in my basement. when summer time came it jumped out of my outdoor pond one day while i was gone.

I think it depends on the fish but i say it is plausible both ways.

Absolutely false. Fish do not grow to their environment, no matter what the fish. There is water quality stunting (the most common case), and then there is physically growing to the limits of the tank (good water, not enough tank). Both will lead to short lives and miserable deaths. Anyone that tells you otherwise has ZERO knowledge of fish.

If u research u can find pics and storis of horribly stunted fish. I know of two fish we have right now that are pretty old yet they will never grow to their full size cuase of how they were raised when my husband and i each first got into fish keping as newbs and didnt knowany better than to trust shop guys.
