Why run the filters in-line? I think they might do a better job running seperately with multiple intakes and exhausts throughout the tank

why I run them inline. It just functions like a huge filter with 1 inlet and 1 exhaust in the tank. think of it this way 3 filters 3 motors that can be turned on has needed, all valved to control flow rate when you what to. It works great.

I don't think running 3 canister inline will equal one big filter with 3x the power of individual canister.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I just don't think it's 1+1+1=3.

Think about what your saying a little more. are saying that 1 canister of the size of 2217 will filter more than three of them in line. what would you say if 6 that size inline? wouldn't that be looked at like a stage filtering system or maybe just another sump looking different.

Based on what you are saying, I'm presuming that by "inline" you will be running them like this.

You can of course run it like this and maximizing the filter media capacity in each filter, however, the turn over rate will be same as a single canister filter if not less.
for example, the flow rate for all filter is 500gph, assuming there's not loss of flow due to restriction then the out flow will still be 500gph, not 1500gph.
by running them separately you'll be able to filter 3x the amount of water within the same given time as each filter is filter at the rate of 500gph.
with a wet/dry (sump) it's different as the overflow can take a large volume of water all at once and the filtration rate is depending on the flow rate of the return pump.
You'll want a overflow with larger flow rate then the return pump used at a given head so you don't flood your fish room (or whatever room the tank is in).

i love when jp goes into professor jp mode and breaks out the drawing and diagrams. i've learned so much stuff from them.

I'm by no means a "professor", at most maybe a freshman in second semester. There still are plenty stuff for me to learn here.

I agree with JP. Canister filters were not designed by the manufacturers to be ran inline like that. Doing so would be rigging it. Of coarse it can be done, but that doesn't mean it would work the best. Caribes and Red bellies do grow super fast. They will need more space in the near future. Especially caribes. I have 5 in a 240 gallon tank and I keep them more than well fed and those punks still continue to fin nip and fight with each other. Imagine in a 125 gallon...
