trying to plan ahead

OK. Thanks again jaws!

Lexitron, nice looking fish! Glad yours grew fins back and stayed healthy. Did you do anything different, like adding anything extra to the water or food?

OK, so the redness went away from where nugget's fins were and both polys have seemed to have gotten bigger in the week I've had them. With the redness gone do I still have to watch for bacterial infections where his fins were or should he be in the clear? I don't see any kind of fin starting to grow back yet, but I will remain patient.

If the redness is gone and acting normal then just keep an occasional eye on it. Sounds like it’s healed over a bit and still to see if the fins grow back.

Cool beans!! Thanks kno4te, and everyone else, because of your time and knowledge I knew that I could do this. You all rock! They are extremely active in the tank swimming all over and I caught the one playing in the air bubbles. I accidently scared nugget one night and he booked it across the tank, he's quick and agile for being handicapped. These guys are fun and I enjoy them. Can't wait for them to get bigger and get my 55g tank ready. Thanks again and I will be sure to keep the thread updated!

BTW, I was watching an older video of king of diy (I know touchy subject) where he visited a fish room and I noticed a mfk logo sticker on the side of the first tank. I forget the persons name, but thought it was cool as heck!

Sorry for the late response; busy work life :/ I didn't do anything extra to the water except some Melafix and then regular changes, checking levels etc. It helped that he was literally the only guy in the tank other than my pleco and he had plenty of places to hide. I was also nearly obsessive in keeping an eye out and checking on him constantly.

a late response is better than no response! gotta keep making that money for more aquarium stuff right? thanks lexitron, I haven't added anything and just did a small water change and I've been making sure to scoop uneaten food out at least once a day.

new project to keep me busy is a diy 10g sump for their future 55g tank. nothing fancy, already ordered like 9lbs of ceramic media (it was a good price) for it. will just have to find glass panels and figure out plumbing. any pictures of sumps and overflow setups would be greatly appreciated!

That's quite an undertaking. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with that yet but I'm sure there is plenty of information here on the subject somewhere. It sounds like you're doing all the right things. If your bichir seems to be doing well without Melafix or treatments, I wouldn't bother unless it seems that he's getting worse.

Sumps are great. Once you go sump you never go back.

There's no need for glass panels (baffles) unless your purposefully trying to create a dedicated space. Lots of us just have pumps, media, and filter socks.

All ofy sumps were set up like this. For me having open space to add bio or equipment like heaters, air stones, or diy filter projects was a must

Ignore all the plumbing lol inside the sump is just two pumps and tons of bio media sitting on top of them. Filter socks are a must. Just order like 10 socks and create a diy sock holder either out of egg crate (lighting difuser) or small PVC pipes. I just swap out dirty socks for clean ones and keep the dirties in a bucket. Bucket gets filled I throw them in the wash machine with a little bleach

nice setup jaws. I ordered 9 lbs of ceramic media separated into 3 bags. I was thinking of making baffles so the water will flow directly through the media instead of just flowing around it. and then have a bigger open area and using sand and some moss balls or some small, hardy, low light plants to take care of some nitrate between water changes and to learn about plant care at the same time.
