He said if you asked everyone more people would say P. Fasciatum, he didn't say everyone would. A dissenting vote wouldn't make him a liar, in fact I would agree that more people would vote the way he suggested.

thank you captain obvious

Must say I havnt ever heard of any other shovelnose being called a TSN, TSN = fasciatum.

Tigrinus I have known as tig, zebra mostly, Juruense is like jur or false tig, never known a tig or jur called a TSN before.

Fasciatum looks more like a tiger, when you look at true tiger, none have stripes like a tigrinus, they are patterned. Tig's look more like zebras than tigers. If you ask everyone on this website, more would say TSN= Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, not Merodontotus Tigrinus or Brachyplatystoma juruense.

lol, they are common names. There's about 10 different common names for every animal in the world depending on where you are located. Look at a puma, cougar, mt. lion, panther, ect. If you research some identification sites they give synonyms for most fish also. There are different common names in their native range than what we use. Tiger shovelnose comes from probably the first explorers who described it, and the name stuck when it started getting imported for the hobby.

Here are the common names for
Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum
Surubi atigrado (Argentina), Tiger Shovelnose Catfish/Barred sorubim
Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum
Tiger Shovelnose Catfish/Tiger sorubim
Brachyplatystoma tigrinum
Dourada Zebra (Brazil), Zebra Shovelnose/Tigerstriped catfish
Brachyplatystoma juruense
Gold Zebra Pim, and have seen it many times refered to as Flash Zebra Shovelnose/Zebra catfish

Those are from planetcatfish, and fishbase qouted after the /

In the end most people use tiger shovelnose for P. fasciatum/P. tigrinum in the United States. In your area it may be the exact opposite. Hope this helped, if not making more confusing. Best to qoute an accurate up to date scientific name for not to common species. TSN(P. fasciatum) is a very common, common name, and I for one will continue to call P. fasciatum TSN. Thanks!

Although we are here to help there is no need for getting pissy... There are alot of sections in the forum that would put up with comments like that, but you will learn right quick that this is not one of them...

:iagree:we are like our fish and you will get eaten ;)

TSN= Tiger shovel nose. Tigs are sometimes called Zebra Shovel Noses. IMO neither truly look like tigers.
However, take a look at this guy:
tell me this doesnt look like a tiger...
