Hey, all! I've been reading the boards for quite a while now. Finally decided to start posting!

Anyways, I'm wondering if it is plausible to use a 100-200 gallon rubber tub to use as a grow out "tank" for my medium (about 5-7 inches) oscars and plecos that are currently steadily outgrowing there temporary 55 gallon. There are 2 oscars and 2 plecos. I will not be keeping the tub outside since I love in Indiana and the weather is insane.

The reason I am wondering about all of this is because I don't have anymore room to place a large tank on the first floor of the house. We haven't finish the basement yet so I don't want to set up a large tank down there and have to move it.

I know that oscars may have a tendency to jump and don't know how I would deal with this if I were to keep them in a 200 gallon tub for about 6-7 months. Any input and adivce on setting this up would be greatly appreciated!

You're in Indiana? awesome...whereabout in IN? (ps check out the link in my sig)

anyway, yes you most definitely can keep those fish in a tub to grow them out or permanently if you'd like. there are a lot of people that use rubbermaid tubs/stock tanks as indoor type ponds. someone else will have to help out with getting you setup with some kind of filtration for it because I only have experience with HOB filters like Aquaclears. granted, you could use aquaclear HOB's but it would be more trouble than its worth. some kind of wet/dry filtration would surely be a lot better.

to keep the fish from jumping out you could get some eggcrate material. you can buy it at just about any hardware store (Lowe's/Menards/Home Depot) in the lighting section. place the sheet on top of the tub and put some rocks or bricks (anything to weight it down) around the edges of the tub and there ya go.

good luck getting this setup :headbang2

The tubs will work just use something as a cover and the fish wont jump out, lots of people have suggested doing the same thing, its also a lot cheaper than a glass tank!

I see you're from Columbus! I live in Carmel, but I go to school at DePauw in Greencastle. This way I can go home and check up on the fish a couple times a month!

Where is a good place to actually purchase a large tub and how much would a 200 gallon cost?

Im about 20 minutes from carmel!!
You can go to the rural king stores and get those tubs fairly inexpensively. The 300 gallons ones are about 150 bucks for a reference.

welcome to MFK!
