Tumor in mouth?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How are you even making these guesses when I haven't even posted a side view picture of him? He's not even close to 20", not even 12".

Here's a pic of both my rtc and tns.

The red tail is like an inch shy of being as long as this tank is deep. He's just turned in the pic, but my tsn is straight and he barely passes the halfway point. the water is still murky from the stirring of the sand.

way too small of a tank for monsters.....

Pic #2 in post 8 is quite deceiving. As for your lumps, could be many things so treatment will be difficult. Could be parasites... Infection/abyss... Or tumors. I would just try clean water... Contact your friend with the pond.

He already came over to see if my red tail is big enough to go in his pond without getting picked on. He thinks it's still a little too small compared to his other red tails so he doesn't want to risk it getting eaten. He said probably in a few more months though if his growth continues at this rate, he'll come by and get it.

okay well obviously the best thing you can do now is increase the quality of the water. i'd increase water changes to 25-50% every two days and if he doesnt get better slowly maybe try to add some type of parasite medicene to the food he eats

IMO, the OP knows what he is doing and if he says his water is good, there is no reason whatsoever to not trust him. He is not asking any one of their opinion on the tank size.

I don't think your TSN issues are from water. First and foremost, his head and head features look distorted, as we had already touched upon. Not horribly but quite clearly to my eye. He has received the short end of the stick in the gene pool - mutants and invalids are quite common among TSNs... remember the duck-bill variant? You got him tiny, at 1" and might have not noticed right away.

Anyhow, the pink balls could therefore be some bony or fleshy growth inside his mouth and be connected with his mutation/facial distortions.

ATM, I'd stand by my other hypothesis that it may be worms. I don't see any harm in trying a dose of praziquantel and seeing what it does. It is very safe and one can almost never overdose.

One thing that can cause mutations and tumors are metals. Please make sure there is no iron (e.g., from twist ties, wire, etc.), aluminum (same; could be cover parts), mercury (from fluorescent light bulbs or thermometers albeit they are all made from colored alcohol these days), etc. etc. sources in the tank, filter, anything in contact with water.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the pictures all show a brutal layer of crap built up in your sand.

Your sand needs a major stirring, you can see the HUGE layers of crap trapped in there. The problem is stirring it all up properly like it needs to be will release gasses that are trapped which will be really bad for the fish (ammonia spike, ph drop). perhaps re-house them for a bit and get that tank cleaned properly and cycled again?

Sand is not something to be simply ignored. It can be a bomb waiting to go off in your tank....

I stirred up the sand pretty well yesterday. A lot of the stuff on top is gravel cuz there used to be gravel in the tank

The sand seems to be pool filter sand. The top part seems to be whiteish, but then there is green and lots of brown.... Unless you have some sort of other substrate in there, this should be a pretty consistent color, which yours isn't. Did you get rid of all that? Not to mention you have a TON of sand in your tank, I would thin it out... You need only a light dusting, maybe 1" of sand tops. you have like 4" in there, I'd perhaps get rid of some dude.... It isn't super healthy considering it also looks super dirty...

This pic reminded me that I forgot to mention that the body shape, the shape and size if the fins is also odd, just like the head features. I've had a 1.5' TSN rescue like that. He was named "Ugly Duckling". :)

I have little experience with the sand. It sounds like you are getting a well grounded advice in this regard.
