No, water changes can't be eliminated, a high turnover ratio would help you out to minimize the ammonia and the solid particles of waste floating all over inside your tank.

Wondering what your average Nitrate levels are like, with such a messy and voracious eater, I think they will always be slightly higher than average. My get down to 10-15ppm right after a water change, but never lower, you?

To be honest i havet tasted for that, I just have done ammonia tastes and I have very low ammonia readings.
My two filters work really well I used to keep 3 piranha of about 9" and they are messier than a single FH you bet money on that.

My ammonia test marks the ammonia level by comparing the color of your tank water in the test tube with a little scheme of colors they provide and according to that color scheme my ammonia is close to 0.0, it always mark in the lighter yellow color there is no clear or lighter color in the scheme so it may be interpreted as 0 ammonia or a little over it.
^^^^ Yeah if i have the change I'll upgrade the set up but in the meantime he'll have to get used to that 55 gal I love that fish and I wont get rid of him i think it can work out with that 55 gal.
I think u should upgrade to a bigger tank ....55 is just not big enough for two full grown males....it may sound crazy but u might be able to put both of them in a 180+ add some target fish and no dividers....jmo....or def start putting money aside for another 55
