I think they're classified now under Astatheros, though I can never keep up with all that.

From what I've seen, they usually max out around 8", prefer harder water, and can become quite territorial.

Great fish and it should do great in your setup and tank mates. I have one around 7-8". I would call them medium aggressive and from what I have seen from mine they will get picked on with aggressive tank mates. You will need a fine substrate, like sand, as they sift for food. Will only eat sinking food as well.

:iagree: i kept just one for several years that grew to around 6". Pretty sure it was a female. I then found some at an lfs and bought about 3 more. They did fine together but were in a 150 gallon mixed community. They never bothered any of the other cichlids and none of the others bothered them but I mostly kept only semi-aggressive cichlids in the tank at the time.

I see no reason why you couldn't do one in your setup, or perhaps even a couple of them since you have a 6' tank. I don't think I'd try more than one in anything smaller than a 6' though because as has already been mentioned, they can be very aggressive with their own kind.

I have one and he is one of my favorite fish. They are pretty peaceful for a CA. They will be very aggressive to their own kind though. They like a fine substrait, and like to dig a lot. Robertsoni grow about 10'' TL and like a meatier diet. I feed mine massivore pellets, blood worms, swordtail fry, and harkari pellets. Mine is about 7'' long now. These are older pics.

not really. they like sand, as everyone has stated. Im sure theyll live, but as stated also, they sift for food and 1mm is too big for them to sift in.
