Turtle from Mercury Contaminated Water

Good news though! I just found a drinking water reservoir by my house and they said you can eat the fish there, so I'm thinking of getting the minnows from there.

And people are saying to take my turtle to a herp vet to get tested but is the mercury in it's body curable? I mean, can you get it out of his system?
 
Take it to the vet.

He/She will answer all of these questions.


If you were the turtle, would you want your "owner" on the internet, asking people questions, OR would you rather go see someone in person who might be able to help you?

Well if I was a turtle, I rather have my owner look it up.
As a human; I hate going to the doctor or dentist..

So are you able to test the emrcury levels or not?

I think you need a trained person to get a blood sample and have it sent to a lab for testing.
 
haha, okay.

there aren't many people that look at reptiles around here in San Jose though.. Reptiles, especially turtles..they have no knowledge of them they say
 
If I was the turtle, I'd want to be released back into my mercury contaminated home that I grew up in.

If I was the turtles captor, I would think about what Oddball has told you regarding closed system contamination, skin absorption, and side effects of poisoning, and come to realize that maybe I don't want a turtle that badly. JMO

Let him go so he can live the remainder of his sterile days glowing in the dark peacefully.
 
Well, I have him registered with the DFG of CA and I would have to pay a fine of couple hundred thousand dollars and jailtime if I release him back where I found him..
He's a Sonora Mud Turtle and he is supposed to be extinct in my state..meaning he's a exotic..
 
Not extinct in CA since you found one in CA waters. The literature states "thought to be extinct". However, the last survey was done in 1962.
Also, it's not an 'exotic' since the species is native to southern California.
 
My bad; they're "thought" to be extinct. And the DFG told me they still have them on their native species list..BUT they are exotic to my area they said..which is northern CA
