It is harder to clean, and it starts to break down turning to gray mud like substance after a few mouths.

I've had several inches of play sand in my 125g tank for about 20 months, and I've never had any trouble cleaning it, or having it "break down". I keep some geophagus and a dragon goby in there, so they turn it over pretty well, maybe that helps. But I've never noticed it being anything other than normal sand.

I think that cichlid mix will probably work fine, as long as its smooth to the touch. If it feels sharp at all to your fingers, I wouldn't use it. And just keep an eye on the turtles. If they show any dislike of the mix, get rid of it for play sand or pool filter sand.

pool filter sand ftw.

So long as you don't mind taking advice from a guy who worked at a fish store for a time...

The aragonite based cichlid mixes are probably a little too jagged, I wouldn't use them with anything that liked to crawl on the bottom.

playsand can break down over time if your water is very soft and very acidic, if your ph is 6+ the sand will probably outlast whatever you keep in the tank. Some mixes have less silica sand and more pulverized rock, which is more prone to breaking down. Regular stirring helps a lot too.

Pool filter sand, being selected for the express purpose of lasting a long time in moving water is much, much better about this.

that cichlid stuff will probably raise PH/akalinity dramatically.
I have no idea how this would affect a soft shell but if I checked my PH and found it to be 8.2, i'd probably want to bring it down.
