turtles with fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are a couple species which are (I don't want to say good lol) not that bad with fish.

First the Fly River Turtle, but only good with fast fish! Mine loves biting the fins of things like gar and aros.

Mata Matas aren't so good with large fish due to the fact they do best in very shallow tanks...

My fave for keeping with fish are the snakeneck turtles. They are completely aquatic, have weak jaws (gulper feeders like a Mata) and tolerate deeper water.

I've kept small matas with similar sized suriname toads... (pipa pipa), no problems. unfortunately the fish dont survive. But some turtles can get along with some nice sized fish...

I have my Razorback Musk currently seperated, due to whenever it comes in contact with anything it will sniff it out to see if its edible. When it smells good it'll take a nice chomp outta it. [Poor fishies and shrimps]

My red eared sliders do fine with my gold fish and other types of koi. Their equal in size. Quarter sized turtles and a lil bigger gold fish and such. The RES usually just hang out on the oyster shells and wait for me to drop pellets for them to eat. [5 RES] About 5 Gold Fish/Koi and a filter fish.

I have my RES with some african cichids for years and the turtle never eats them.. Although, the RES has eaten one plec, a LARGE catfish that I thought she'd have no interest in, 2 clown loaches, a red tail and dozens of barbs.

For some reason she doesnt mess with the cichlids. I think they have a deal worked out to 'off' the other fish.
