I have a RES in with a texas cichlid out in my pond. The pond is only 300 gallons, but they are the only things living in it. So far nothing bad has happened, but the way it worked out, I just really needed to rehome/move my texas so he ended up in the pond for the summer. Really all I have done is delayed my problem, I dont know what I am going to do with him this winter.
Totally depends. I had a lone Red Eared Slider, and my x-roommate bought him some 'friends' (6 feeder goldfish) because he looked lonely in his tank by himself...
3 were gone the next day, the other 3 lasted for almost 7 months. Never a problem with the 3 he left. They were almost his pets.... I don't know if it was that they didn't bother/annoy him so he left them alone or what.
But I guess he decided he didn't like them anymore and one day when I got home from work, they were gone!

My texas is about 10-11 inches long. The turtle is only about 6 inches long. They seem to leave each other alone for the most part. To the extent of my knowledge the texas fins aren't nipped or anything and the turtle seems fine. The pond is big enough that they dont really interact with each other very much. I will try to get some pictures later, but I can guarantee that you will be able to see much, lol. The water is clear, but I suck at taking pictures of fish.
My experience with turtles is that they put out a tremendous amount of waste. I've had a diamondback terrapin for 13 years, and he is a poop machine. I never tried to keep fish with him on purpose, but I woudl be concerned with water quality for the fish if I did. It isn't an issue with the turtle because they just swim in the water, and ammonia build up isn't detrimental to their health.
I've put feeders in with him occasionally, and they are usually all eaten within a week or two.
Unless you have a huge tank/pond, I wouldn't risk it.

if you do in fact get a turtle, make sure it is a turtle that doesnt exceed the 6-7inch mark. RES get about a foot and can soon prey on your larger cichlids. Just go with smaller water turtles
I have kept mostly side necked turtles together with cichlids. Peter's sidenecks grow up to 14 inch and can be kept together with adult convicts. The convicts bred in the same tank and attacked the turtle vigorously when they came too near. The big male didn't even care when the turtles snapped after him. It was 160gallon tank by the way.
I also currently keep a 10 inch Amazon toad headed turtle with 2 5 inch JD's and an L191 panaque and in another tank there's an 8 incher with an adult green terror. No problem here also. The turtle snapped once at the fish, but he didn't care. If it's in his way, he attacks it.

Yup. Gonna need a very LARGE tank (pond is what your after here), and decently sized Texans. Your gonna have to create the best natural habitat you can so they won't bother each other.
No way in hell I would drop an escondido in there regardless....that's a $$ fish.
