TV upgrade: LCD or LED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know they use LED's for some lights, but not HEADLIGHTS which is what I said. And the LED lightbulbs I have seen for sale were very gimmicky and expensive. Again, I like LEDs, but it's just a better lighting system trying to improve the LCD technology.

Oh and again, If you are talking about monitors, congrats, the LCD wins. If you want to talk about HDTVs, Plasma is King, and I'm willing to concede that possibly one of the new OLED techs will be the heir since all technology is eventually surpassed, but since LCD's are just now starting to get parity in some but never all categories of performance I don't see them as better.

This was never a debate on value or which monitor is best for still pictures.

Also I have seen today some LED LCD's that were very nice. Much better viewing angle and motion blur than what I have seen previously. And as I mentioned, the new sharp LCD's that are 60, 70 or 80" and VERY popular look teeeerrrible. It sounds like the reviews all agree this, but I will say I have now seen some pretty nice LED LCD's and I'm glad they have come a long way from where they were before. :)

I like the second one because they talked to executives at Sharp and Viewsonic, both LCD makers.. lol and they were factually accurate. LED LCD's are brighter and better for bright rooms and use less energy. I agree completely.

Yea man see that's good info, its not about who has the best tv on mfk, just comparisons for the op.

Also take a look at the second pic I posted of the Audi ^^, that is full led headlight European spec, its a manufactured vehicle that uses all leds but that's just one example, i think they look great and like I said before it will help with mpg.

This being my generation I think it was awesome seeing common lighting going from incandescent to florucent to cfl to led! I have some led flood as security lights around my house and man are they bright, the inside of my house has all cfl, fishtanks have cfl and led, my power bill has decreased Atleast 10%/month since I made the switch.

Love the f1 tail having bright red led, f1 has used them since the mid 90's:

Also the f1 steering wheel rev indicator is rad, pretty complicated 40k$ piece of equitment.

I'm not saying it should be closed but I'm surprised it's still open. A lot of snakes in the grass using the damn report button nowadays

Sometimes the report button isn't intended as means of punishment, sometimes its used to get unrelated post of someone's thread to keep it on track and not get the thread closed, especially when the person specifies they just want a post deleted and want no recourse for the poster.....

I didn't read everyone's suggestions but I took back two different led tvs before I got my Samsung 1080 p 120 htz LCD. LEDs are good and bright but on dark movies you can see the edge lights behind the screen. I couldn't stand it. I have not seen one tv that looks better than mine.

Mine doesn't do that, but my xbox has setting for that, and my advanced hd direct tv reciever is awesome too, everything plugged into my tv is HDMI, and my audio is OPTICAL out, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

It is probably led bleed out from hhaving the leds to bright. Maybe having the tv on vivid??
Probably causing the halo effect also.

Not that you LCD peeps would care, but this would be a good time for you to mirror what i said. Superbright LED/LCD's are best in bright environments, but man oh man in the dark i.e. movie watching and video game playing, plasma is OH SO GOOD. :)

I don't care about the weight, I don't care about the thickness (It's still a flat panel and I don't watch my tv from the side..) I don't care about the energy efficiency, I just want super-high quality.

The only thing that bugs me about plasma is the glass reflection. I used to worry about screen burn-in, but that doesn't happen on modern plasmas. The first time i saw some ghosting after a long pause I hit play and whatdoyouknow it was gone in a second. hehehe

There is a TV at the gym at work and that gym is super-bright with lights and windows. I'm glad thats a LED-LCD, but for home, it's just got to be a plasma.

Majorhavok,
Modern panasonic plasma models ST and up use a louvre filter that really helps block reflection. If you see my picture several posts back, I have all the lights on in the background and you cant see me in the reflection; which is an issue with other brand's plasmas, such as samsung's lower models or LG.
We no longer need to express the facts about plasmas, after all this is a fish forum ;)
