TV upgrade: LCD or LED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Man don't take it so personal! You must own a lot of Panasonic stock :)

I've already stated many times why I prefer an LCD over a plasma. You stay LCD colors are washed out, I say plasma is over-saturated and look like a cartoonish comic book. You say LCD blacks look blue, I say look around you. Pay attention to black objects around you. LCD produces REALISTIC looking pictures.

If plasma color was so "accurate", it would be used by professionals outside of home cinema. Go tell a pro photographer to do some photo editing using a plasma display as a monitor and he'd laugh at you, then go back to relying on his IPS-LCD.

But we are talking about tvs.... Not monitors... And also we first were talking about lcd leds... I have an lcd and love it also. But i prefer plasma.
We are talking about leds here that is what endo refers to as washed out.

Hardly.... I'm rocking a new 450$ 40" 120hz 1080p led lcd, but that's my point, economical and great quality, I don't need to walk into best buy and ask for the biggest and baddest tv, not when I have piranhas, python, beardy, turtle, gf and cat to take care of, my led meets my requirements in every way, shape and form and that was the original point of this thread.

Good points, I mean don't get me wrong, those Panasonic plasmas are awesome but in the coming years like anything they will become outdated and next in line is Oled.

Imo this was a good discussion and I learned a lot, no hard feelings between anyone, the op got some very good insights on his options. Cheers

Yes of course. But the display technology is identical, and supports my opinion of preferring realistic colors, whether it's a tv or a monitor.

I'm big into photography so color accuracy is a big deal for me. All of my monitors are calibrated using a Datacolor Spyder Elite unit that hangs over the monitor.

So naturally when I see a plasma I'm turned off by it. The image looks like it sat in the Photoshop oven too long, as we say in the photography world :)

Plasma technology is the equivalent of the halogen bulb in the lighting world. It will slowly become obsolete. LCD displays are used EVERYWHERE. Why? Pixel density.

Show me a plasma display that can achieve the pixel density of an LCD screen. As of today we have phones with 5" LCD screens with 1080p resolution.

The next phase in display tech will be OLED/AMOLED and it's already being used in smart phones.

The black blacks argument is a joke. I don't need black colors to look like they were colored in with a permanent marker. That is NOT a true black as you guys call it.

I think you are just being silly now, you dont want black to be too black? And the "cartoonish" isnt plasma man, thats the fake frames in stepped up lcd i.e. 120/240hz. And Im not sure who these pros are who are lugging tvs around to show still pictures, but if I was a tv mover of course I would want a smaller lighter TV. And who cares to stare at still pics all day on their tv? And who other than you says lcd gives better color rendition? Post a link because there isnt one. A lot of video gamers still use crt monitors because they had superior picture quality over lcd panels.

And as for taking over everything? I havent seen a car for sale that had led headlights.. and my house doesnt have led roomlights. I like LED but the simple fact is they are still working out the problems with lcd tv lighting issues which is why they keep trying different things.

1. I didn't say lugging around TVs. Monitors, that use the same LCD technology because they're superior. Links? I posted up some links earlier to professional-grade LCD displays. I looked for pro-grade plasma displays but guess what, there aren't any. If you want more go check out a photography forum. You'll finds lots of threads where people will ask if they can use their plasma as an accurate monitor, then see the responses :)

2. You haven't seen a car for sale that uses LED headlights? You must not pay very good attention. Check out the 2008 Lexus LS600h. Then look at what Audi is doing. BMW, and even Nissan. In the aftermarket world, LEDs are HUGE. Off-road lighting has taken a massive leap towards LED lighting like this: https://www.trailduty.com/images/gobi_jk_led_mount2.jpg

3. Your house doesn't have LEDs...And that indicates a problem with the technology, because you refuse to buy them? Um okay. Walk into any Home Depot or Lowes and you'll see all the new LED bulbs coming out. My city now uses street lamps with LEDs instead of the old tech. LEDs are the future of the lighting world.

Why are we arguing so much and getting so defensive about plasma vs LCD? We should just be happy that we don't have to watch 19" SD bubble screen TV's anymore, lol. I much prefer plasma, but they're both way better than what I'm used to. My computer monitor is a 32" LCD, but it's only 720p...much better than the old 19" that replaced it, though.

Wow man look at audi's, their fog lights, turn signals and running lights are all led, that's just one brand. Car lighting puts load on the alternator and consumes more power thus more gas.

I don't think you realize this is a discussion, not an argumentative pissing contest.

I know they use LED's for some lights, but not HEADLIGHTS which is what I said. And the LED lightbulbs I have seen for sale were very gimmicky and expensive. Again, I like LEDs, but it's just a better lighting system trying to improve the LCD technology.

Oh and again, If you are talking about monitors, congrats, the LCD wins. If you want to talk about HDTVs, Plasma is King, and I'm willing to concede that possibly one of the new OLED techs will be the heir since all technology is eventually surpassed, but since LCD's are just now starting to get parity in some but never all categories of performance I don't see them as better.

This was never a debate on value or which monitor is best for still pictures.

Also I have seen today some LED LCD's that were very nice. Much better viewing angle and motion blur than what I have seen previously. And as I mentioned, the new sharp LCD's that are 60, 70 or 80" and VERY popular look teeeerrrible. It sounds like the reviews all agree this, but I will say I have now seen some pretty nice LED LCD's and I'm glad they have come a long way from where they were before. :)

I like the second one because they talked to executives at Sharp and Viewsonic, both LCD makers.. lol and they were factually accurate. LED LCD's are brighter and better for bright rooms and use less energy. I agree completely.

The 2008 Lexus LS600 used a FULL LED headlight.
