TV upgrade: LCD or LED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Plasma technology is the equivalent of the halogen bulb in the lighting world. It will slowly become obsolete. LCD displays are used EVERYWHERE. Why? Pixel density.

Show me a plasma display that can achieve the pixel density of an LCD screen. As of today we have phones with 5" LCD screens with 1080p resolution.

The next phase in display tech will be OLED/AMOLED and it's already being used in smart phones.

The black blacks argument is a joke. I don't need black colors to look like they were colored in with a permanent marker. That is NOT a true black as you guys call it.

The smallest plasma screen starts at 42 inches now... Good luck putting that in a phone.... Lol
How about refresh rate... That doesn't have to do with blacks....
But when is comes to audio/ videophiles that is what they are looking for (black levels).... But that is the people that take audio and video as a hobby like we take fishkeeping..
And how do i now audio/videophiles prefer plasma is because i was a home theater installer for digital ear which is the best audio/videophile company they offer the best!

That's what I mean. The restrictions of the technology that only allows big screen sizes limits the market for plasma displays. That means it's not widely used, which means less companies building them and less people buying them. It's inevitable. It will slowly die out.

Samsung's paper-thin flexible transparent displays...that's where the future is.

I think the one major benefit plasmas have today is the refresh rate for fast movement. We'll just have to wait and see if other displays can match that in the future.

Yes we will see. And i cant wait till that happens.
And if your talking a thin tv
Check out the 63 inch runco plasma that thing is thinner then most leds maybe not the thinnest but there thinner then 50% of the leds
And forsure thinner then any Lcds have you seen how big those suckers are....

So nowadays, people care more about how thin a TV is and how small pixel density is; not the picture quality.

You say plasmas will die out...yet they are the highest rated televisions on the market with the LEAST amount of problems.
Im guessing people on these forums either dont comprehend what Im posting or simply dont want to. Plasmas have stepped up their game with the new phosphors used in the Neo Plasmas, if anything they are just on the rise.
In terms of you not wanting your blacks as black as they can be, go ahead and enjoy your blueish blacks you get out of your edge-lit LEDs with motion blur, and washed out colors.
And for the 3rd time, no system will out-do the sub-field gas system of a plasmas refresh rate. It is simply the highest and no LED/OLED/AMOLED will beat it while still cost double the price.

Its ok Acubillos19, we no longer need to waste our time. They just cant accept the facts. Spending more $ for a thinner TV thats bright enough to hurt your eyes is where people are heading

These are the reasons we chose LG over the other lower priced units on display:
1. At $749.99, it's $100 cheaper than the other brands.
2. A rating of 4 stars out of 5 from average consumers.
3. Speakers are located at the bottom of the unit. Sound is louder. We do not use the surround when
watching regular cable programs.
4. Overall appearance is appealing.
5. LG has been around for a while now and is one of the trusted brands (at least over here) in
electronics and appliances.
It may not be a top of the line unit but a big improvement in size and picture over our old 32". We are happy with it and we think it matches our 8 yr. old surround system. Just finished setting up and still working on cable management. Here are some pics:

Hardly.... I'm rocking a new 450$ 40" 120hz 1080p led lcd, but that's my point, economical and great quality, I don't need to walk into best buy and ask for the biggest and baddest tv, not when I have piranhas, python, beardy, turtle, gf and cat to take care of, my led meets my requirements in every way, shape and form and that was the original point of this thread.

Good points, I mean don't get me wrong, those Panasonic plasmas are awesome but in the coming years like anything they will become outdated and next in line is Oled.

Imo this was a good discussion and I learned a lot, no hard feelings between anyone, the op got some very good insights on his options. Cheers

Man don't take it so personal! You must own a lot of Panasonic stock :)

I've already stated many times why I prefer an LCD over a plasma. You stay LCD colors are washed out, I say plasma is over-saturated and look like a cartoonish comic book. You say LCD blacks look blue, I say look around you. Pay attention to black objects around you. LCD produces REALISTIC looking pictures.

If plasma color was so "accurate", it would be used by professionals outside of home cinema. Go tell a pro photographer to do some photo editing using a plasma display as a monitor and he'd laugh at you, then go back to relying on his IPS-LCD.

My gf needs glasses to watch my telly, but now with my led she no longer needs them when we watch movies.
