Smaller in fresh. Larger in salt.
Yes. From memory, I read 1.5ft in fresh, 3ft in salt. In the wild the max is 5ft. Ours has been so far a total confirmation of the freshwater max number.

I love these guys. If I had a big enough tank, for sure would be the stars. I've seen some decent sized freshwater ones here. They get sold as Oxeye herring here.

A bit of an update on the 3 tarpon. The only thing to note is that they used to relish local (south Florida caught) 2"-3" glass minnows / anchovy but we ran out of them a couple months ago, so they had to take only the NLS pellets. In a month or two we got Peruvian smelt, looks like a glass minnow type too, ~4"-6", yellow tail, lateral white stripe, but the tarpons refuse to take it, even cut into smaller size, they spit them out. Hence, their growth slowed down 10x it seems.
