Thankyou. I deal with it all the time. I think of myself as a responsible dog owner. Both love people, but one doesn't like other dogs. Guess what Izzy, if you can't play nice with other dogs you stay on the lead. Salem is a good boy so he gets to run around. Trouble is there are a lot of people that don't control their (potentially) dangerous dogs so theres this whole stigma and bad name going on. I have people cross the road when they see me walking my dogs cus of the stereotype created by the idiotic few. We don't (legally) have pitbulls in england so staffies are the equivalent I guess. The press have branded them 'devil dogs' and whenever you see a headline for a child being attacked or a dog being savaged a staffy is to blame. But when you open the paper and read the full story 9 times in 10 its a crossbreed. Staffs, true Staffordshire Bull terriers arent big, they are smaller than your amstaffs but people breed them with mastiffs and american bulldogs etc. to get more size on them. Teen gangs have these big angry dogs as weapons cus if you get caught with a knife its jailtime, a dog is just a dog. People are what cause the problem 99% of the time and mans best friend suffers as a result.

It doesn't matter if it's a crossbred or not, they still has that gene that makes them more gameness than other dog breeds. You won't breed these traits out of the dogs and even in crossbreeding, these traits still stuck in them.

I didn't say the gameness was bred out of them. It's the stability and temperament that can suffer.

weird, guess i'm ignorant cuz i leave my pit unattended with small children all the time and wouldn't have hesitated with the family's german shephard growing up. Truth is, each individual dog is different and it's up to YOU TO KNOW YOUR DOGS no different then knowing your surroundings at all time.

such blind statements of YOU SHOULD NEVER DO THIS OR THAT are silly. in this scenario, the 2 year old wasn't left alone with a dog (or the pack). it went and FOUND the pack. End of story. how does this turn into a discussion about if it's ok to leave your dog alone with small children?

It isn't remotely silly. How many times have you heard someone say 'but it was such a lovely dog, wouldn't hurt a fly' after its torn someone a new one. Id rather not risk becoming a statistic. The whole thing started about a kid being mauled by dogs. I think thats where the leaving alone came from. Whether the kid was left alone or the dogs were left somewhere an unsupervised kid could easily access is irrelevant. The sad unfortunate result was the same.

in your scenario of "but it's such a nice dog", i'm probably going to error on the side of unaware or ignorant owners. All i hear is internet/news story with no true background when this happens. how many true personal stories do you hear about this from the various dog owners you know? Seems most people recognize a dog that's too aggressive with their child and get rid of it or don't leave it unattended with their child

As for the scenario in this thread, the kid crawled out of a window into the backyard? they didn't leave it unattended with the dogs. they shouldn't have left it unattended with vicious dogs on the property period, nothing to do with a well trained dog. heck, a 2 year old shouldn't be left alone with a bathtub of bunnies.

Im lucky in that I dont know anyone whos gone through that with their kids. However I do know someone, a longtime dog owner, who out of the blue have his previously placid dog attack his wife. Over the course of 24 hours it went from loving pet to biting her several times. He had to rehome the dog. Actually another friend of mine had to have his fluffy lapdog put to sleep because out of nowhere after years having it, it started biting his grandchildren. No sign or reason for it. Obviously a bit different to a pit or similar due to damage potential from a cotton candy ball. But same principle.

And just to clarify is it silly to say kids shouldn't be left unattended or is it 'heck a 2 year old shouldn't be left with bathful of bunnies'

Lol well I'm screwed I have a great Dane I recued, a pit I just rescued, a lab Rhodesian ridge back mix I rescued and a mini dach. So my question is this if ppl like me sit here and listen to the what if and could be's who's gonna be the one to stand up for the good mistreated and potentially violent dogs who in just as many case have saved ppl and their children from fathers who beat their kids and wife's (just an example) I'm from a pit bull family both raised from pups and saving them from death row at the pound with acid burns on it (true story). I'm truley more afraid of the "family dogs" than the viscous named ones point is my brother had his face ripped off litteraly very close to it by the family dog vs any of the rescue dogs we had

I think statistically there are probably more attacks by 'fashion accessory' dogs than 'devil dogs' and their ilk. But lets face it, a maltese isn't going to rip your arm off.
