Two year old mauled to death by five pitbull mixes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's not just the breed to me although pitbulls seem to have a history of attacks on people but any large size dog can potentiality do damage to people. I had a 38 pound english bulldog and he attacked 5 people. The funny thing is half of them thought it was cute and he was just playing. I now have a yorkiepoo (fail) ha ha. I will say that some of the bully pitbull breeds I see are gorgeous looking dogs. Cropped ears look good on some of them but that usually scares the hell out of people. My woman won't go near any pitbull type breed.

Any dog bred from a fighting line shouldnt be trusted w/ children. Or hunting line. If its from a breeder who breeds companions you shouldnt have to worry about leaving a couple staff terriers with them kids. They could be rescues for all we know like your dogs are, I'm not saying the people themselves were fighting them but if there's a big group of pits like that in LA and something like this happens, at least a few of them were more then likely used in fighting. My aunt has seen dumpsters full of pits in LA

Sorry, I didnt explain that too well. My 2 staffs specifically weren't bred for fighting, they're not rescues. I meant the breed as a whole going back many generations. But even so I wouldn't want to leave them with kids unsupervised. The amount of times hes bitten me when we are playing, not attacked bit, but grabbed my hand by mistake trying to get his rope or whatever. But breed aside, I still wouldn't leave any dog, even a chihuahua, alone with kids. Young kids. Im in england, and while around in places im sure, thankfully there isnt as much of an issue here with dogfighting.

Ahh I see yeah I don't hear about dog fighting in the UK too often haha its a plague in the south of the US. They were bread to fight bulls, not people haha hence why if the line is bred from companions they should be able to be trusted w/ children. Was it not people from the UK who gave them the nickname nanny dogs? The ones I've known would protect their owners kids to the death, although the reason any of us shouldn't leave young ones with any dogs played out in my cousins house once.

She had a German shepherd, and IMHO you have more to fear from them then from Pits, but back on topic, she went to the bathroom, leaving her 2 year old in the same room with the shepherd. The Shep was sleeping so she thought nothing of it. Then she heard a yelp and crying she jumped up and went to see, the baby had shoved her fingers down his ear and he had a reaction bite, didn't bite down but grazed her with his teeth. Her father wouldn't have it, so they put it to sleep. Kids need to be watched carefully in ANY situation

Sounds like a parenting problem to me... too bad the dog had to pay for the mistakes of the owner.

Yeah, bulls and bears. Was only when that was banned someone had the bright idea to make them fight each other. They are sposed to be people friendly so the handlers could tend to injured dogs without fear of being attacked. The biggest problem with these type of breeds is the idiots that crossbreed them. Whether it be to make them bigger, stronger, angrier or whatever. The good traits get diluted and bad traits make their way in. But even a purebred people loving example, or any dog for that matter, is only a few steps removed from a wild animal. The case with the alsation is a classic example of why young kids shouldn't be unattended. That could easily have been a goldie or a collie or a pitbull. Child does wrong thing and dog reacts. If there's a group of dogs and one reacts badly, group mentality or pack behaviour could come into play. Keep the kids out of the situation and they won't get hurt. Or at least lower the chance.

Thankyou. I deal with it all the time. I think of myself as a responsible dog owner. Both love people, but one doesn't like other dogs. Guess what Izzy, if you can't play nice with other dogs you stay on the lead. Salem is a good boy so he gets to run around. Trouble is there are a lot of people that don't control their (potentially) dangerous dogs so theres this whole stigma and bad name going on. I have people cross the road when they see me walking my dogs cus of the stereotype created by the idiotic few. We don't (legally) have pitbulls in england so staffies are the equivalent I guess. The press have branded them 'devil dogs' and whenever you see a headline for a child being attacked or a dog being savaged a staffy is to blame. But when you open the paper and read the full story 9 times in 10 its a crossbreed. Staffs, true Staffordshire Bull terriers arent big, they are smaller than your amstaffs but people breed them with mastiffs and american bulldogs etc. to get more size on them. Teen gangs have these big angry dogs as weapons cus if you get caught with a knife its jailtime, a dog is just a dog. People are what cause the problem 99% of the time and mans best friend suffers as a result.

weird, guess i'm ignorant cuz i leave my pit unattended with small children all the time and wouldn't have hesitated with the family's german shephard growing up. Truth is, each individual dog is different and it's up to YOU TO KNOW YOUR DOGS no different then knowing your surroundings at all time.

such blind statements of YOU SHOULD NEVER DO THIS OR THAT are silly. in this scenario, the 2 year old wasn't left alone with a dog (or the pack). it went and FOUND the pack. End of story. how does this turn into a discussion about if it's ok to leave your dog alone with small children?
