Can anyone tell me what type of Frontosa I have. He was a rescue and is doing very well. We call him Barney, he is 8" and so good natured. He shares an 85 gal tank with a Black-Banded Leporinus that is 13" and an 11" Tire Track Eel.

Thanks

You got quite a deal. That appears to be tanzanian, most likely a mpimbwe. They are normally quite expensive and fairly hard to come by unless you know a home breeder that will give you a deal. Im not 100 percent sure on that id, but i believe its accurate. I have included a link for ID'ing the varients of fronts with pics of each type and the names that go with that type. Check it out and see if you agree.

Hope this helps you out. Regardless he is gorgeous, that is fantastic color by the way, very intense blue. If you keep him where other fish wont shred its fins he will slowly grow some fin extenstions (he should anyway) Oh, and get him some sinking food, fronts are prone to something called bloat (trapped air in the gut, nasty business)Sinking food and not over eating seems to help with that. He is a carnavore so he can eat some live foods too.

I went to that site and I think he fits with the Zambian. His eye stripe stops at the eye and the Tanzanian eye stripe continues down the jaw. He is so cool I feed him once a day and I cut up shrimp and silversides. He will not eat pellets or any of the sinking wafers. Now he is just spoiled. I hope to have him until I am old. We think he is between 5 and 6 years. It was an oscar that took the bites out of his dorsal fin. His two ther tank mates are pretty mellow. He like to go stir up the Leporinus and chase he out of her spot. I would love to find him another of his kind and give them their own tank. Maybe some day.

Thanks again

Okay I did some more researh and he is a Ziare. He has the Zorro mask as it is called and the black shading in his fins. I was wondering if the is what he was but needed some help with making the correct ID. Please tell me if you agree.

Thanks

I will send its pic to some front breeder/ collectors i know and get their input. i will let you know what they say later today.

wow thats a beauty....

I wouldn't say Zaire yet..
Maybe another picture of the front because the mask doesn't seem to go to the forehead...
But depends on mood but more pictures will def confirm...

But im going to say Tanzanian or Zambian

im pretty sure its not a zaire. I am also pretty sure that it is a tanzanian. There are several types that have slightly different masks. I am thinking it is a mpimbwe, i just bought some that arrived today and doing my research the majority of the mpimbwe looked like your fish. Zaire have a different looking mask, they are just as blue, maybe bluer but as i said , the mask is bigger and covers more area. Tanzanian have narrow eye markings/masks between the eyes.
