I am currently renovating/expanding a pond that fell into disrepair about 6 years ago. Currently its only about 1' deep and 3' long and 5' wide. I live in portland oregon so there is no way I can keep tropical fish in it over the winter or even fall. I want to make it deeper but dont know if I have enough liner to do so. I am pretty new to ponds and this will be the first I have done myself. I dont like goldfish in a pond (I like them in my Knifes mouth :headbang2 ) and its not big enough for koi. With those dimensions what fish can I put it in?

Also, what kind of pond filter should I get? All the websites that sell them only seem to have ones that are for 1000gallon and up ponds. I obviously dont need that much, and dont have that much money.

if you like the look of koi but the size and price of goldfish, get shubunkin goldfish.
they look just like little koi.

You've got about 100g to work with and # 12" deep I don't beleive your below the frost line. It would be hard on any fish if not deadly to try it...maybe with a good heater 24/7 but...

Keep natives sunfish, blue gill etc., or shad / chubs (are carp legal in your area?)(bait shop).

Keep us posted,

I am really going to give it a good try and make it deeper. I will try to get some pictures of it also. I will also look into thos shubunkin gold fish BG was talking about. Thanks for the ideas guys, I will keep yopu posted.

Looks like you've got something to work with there, should turn out real nice...looks sheltered too.

I'd still keep a 50g plastic tub around for wintering the fish indoors.

Check with your agricutural extension office (or a concrete contractor) to see what the front line is there, you should be 18" below it if your not going to do a heater 24/7.

Keep up the good work,

Well I worked on it for anbother 4+ hours today, dugg it to about 15 inches depth, took out the liner and cleaned it, and expanded the walls. It should be about 200 gallons now, I would really like to make it deeper but I just dont have the amount of liner to do it. I will post more pictures in the mourning, its really coming along nicely.

There will be a waterfall/cascade thing in the corner of the tank which should stave of freezing but should I still take the fish out in the winter? How big of a heater should I get for a pond this size. the biggest I have seen for sale around here is an 800watt. Would that do the job?

Try a farm supply store for the heater (for cattle troughs):

Something on that order, it depends on your temerature swings too.

Anyone else in your neighborhood have a pond? Ask them if they have had a hard freeze or other problems. Most people with ponds love to talk about them.
