Tyrannochromis macrostoma

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes they are. IMO they are the best malawi has to offer.

Speaking of rift lake predators, any of you ever keep the barracuda cichlids (Rhamphochromis) or mackerel cichlids (Bathybates)?? I've had bathybates but never rhamphochromis.

It's hard to say exactly what they are but let me tell you guy's this, Those are beautiful fish, Truly some tankbuster's. I'll be looking for some of them for my 180!.

nice

I know this is a little old, but I'm catching up on some of the more "cool" topics since I'm new. I can't see the pics since I haven't posted yet. I can say that there is/was/probably will be for some time confusion with Tyrranochromis species. There were 4 descriptions, but now mainly just T. nigriventer and T. macrostoma. The main way to tell the two fish apart "the length of the premaxillary pedicel - the sliding element of hte upper jaw" according to Ad Konings. If the bulge is closer to the eye then its T. macrostoma. Geographical varients make using coloration hard to identify. The trade name of orange - spot has often been used for both species. They are fairly rare in the hobby. I've had a group of six once that were T. nigriventer. Unfortunately they were a chapter in my book 1,001 Ways To Kill Your Fish:( . I have to comment on the price...ouch. Glad I get mine cheap. I already like the fact that there are others with good taste in fish here :)

Yeah ouch for the price is right, esspecially since I started this tread both of the females have been murderd by tankmates. Male is doing great though. I don't really look at price though, it is more of, is it something I want.

I don't know why everybody thinks they are a fusco. I know now that it isn't a macrostoma but a nigriventer. Tyrannochromis come from all over the lake and depnding on location is what their color is. Not all the tyrannochomis ard just all blue. Some of the macrostomas have yellow on the bottom half of th body and some are all blue. Some nigriventors are all blue but some have orange on the side like mine does and those are called tyrannochromis sp. orange spot. Fusco's do look very simimlar in a lot of ways but what are in my pictures is a tyrannochromis. I was going to post pictures but my camera isn't working at the moment. Here are some pictures of the type of tyrannochromis I have and you can even see the orange on the side, it just isn't as bright as the one I have.

You can see body shape is similar color wise can be close as well depending on fish but fuscos have more of a red than orange. If you look at the two links mine most definatly a tyrannochromis and not a fusco.

how r your tyrannochromis doing, i just got some more after mine died,
