I could really use some help I'm about thinking about buying some Uaru cichlids for my tank. I've got 2 Indo dats in there already and was wondering will the Uaru's be able to get along with the dats. I was also wondering about any helpful info anyone might have about Uaru's and how to keep them successfully. Plus I'd really like to see some photo's of Uaru adults if anyone's keeping them please post some pics. Thanx in advance.

basically just like discus. extremely delicate pH sensitive, your dats might pick on them but i doubt it. they do eat plants though so thats out of the question.

uaru A. are nothing like discus when it comes to care as long as they arent wild caught. its uaru F. that needs to be treated like discus, tank bred and captive bred. they are in no way as hard to take care of like i have read about as long as they are tank bred ones.
i do my water changes from the tap and its dechlorinated and thats as much treatment as my water gets and they are thriving, ph7.9 dont know the other levels (no flaming pls none of my fish have ever suffered). i dont use RO because i believe that if your unit breaks then your fish will suffer from having to switch from the purist water to tap so i just use tap it cuts that risk. they have good colour and have never had disease, they were very torn up when i got them as the lfs put them in with larger rainbow cichlids and they healed in a couple of weeks, no fins to full fins, so my water must be fine.
my 2 are the tank bosses and are not afraid to tell anyone who is boss. so they arent as weak as people make out. my 2 used to hang with my 6" GT and they were bold as brass with him, stealing his bloodworm etc.
good luck if you decide to get them, they have amazing character.

bogwood bruce has a large 1 i think its about 10-12"

that reminds me. forgot to mention they need bogwood in the tank to nibble. something to do with their digestion system if i remember right.
i also buy cheap plants called Elodea Densa, they love that above most others i have tried. also dont assume that java fern and anubis species are safe. my anubias nana has chunks missing and java fern is apparently quite tastey. floating plants will also not last long.
you need masses of fast growing plants to beat their appetites. i bought 5 bunches, about 10 stalks per bunch, of elodea hoping to beat them as it grow like wild fire but im having to try ten bunches this month to try and beat them again.

they are great fish !!!! they need to by kept in AT LEAST pairs (3 or more is better) they get quite large i have 3 in my 220 and they rang from 11" - 8"
they like warmer water 82-84 they need veggies in their diet and a little wood to nibble on.

They are really easy to care for i change about 50% a week and my ph is 8+ so that is not a problem.

here is a good link for you. http://www.wetpetz.com/uaru.htm

I had an uaru once, and it didn't seem too hard to keep, a good addition to a lesser aggressive SA tank with geos and festivums and that sort of thing

yea they do awesome with fish like severums, acaras and geo's
would look weird with dats though

I haven't had any problems keeping uarus with dats, although they can be pretty aggressive feeders so if the dats are shy feeder the uaru might get the shrimp/whatever first. How big are the dats?
They're not at all hard to keep, my largest is about 6-7". They usually do better in groups when young, but as they get older they don't always enjoy each others company. I had a trio that got along well for ages, but then the two larger ones started picking on the small one. If I removed one of the large ones then the remaining large one and the smaller one got on fine. A friend had to separate his two at about 6-7" because the larger one started getting aggressive towards the other one.

Uaru and dats should be fine at a smaller size, and if raised to gether until adult hood, they should still be fine. I would get at least 4, i find with only 3, one is always getting picked on when the other two form a pair. But that wont happen till around the 4-5 inch mark. They are a sort of slow grower, maybe a half inch per month on average. I have 7 uaru and i find they will eat almost anything, but can be picky with pellets. Mine prefer Hikari excel, and Hikari gold sinking formula. The go nuts for hikari discus bio-gold and frozen boold worm, they also love romane lettuce, but male a mess out of the tank from it. I keep the water at warmer temps of 82-84. PH doesnt seem to matter that much as i have a ph of 7.6 with hard water. Mine dont like stong currents, and need lots of cover, so some driftwood and fake plants work well. I have added 3 airstones to the tank recently and they seem to enjoy them, as they all play in them constantly. I filter with an FX5 and have the out put nozzle in the middle of the tank with both spouts pointing to opposite sides of the tank and slightly upwards to cut down on the strong current. I also used dither fish with them when i only had 3, but there not really need after around 4 inches, as they become less shy. they are not needed at all if you have more than 3.. hope this helps!
