I've seen a couple posts that had mentioned Uarus. But yet, I haven't seen any threads on them.
I was on line doing some research, and I understand a lot about them because I wanted some.
My question: anyone have bad luck with them or maybe come across some do's and don't s?
Anyone breeding them?

If you're referring to the fernandepezi, I don't personally have any but from what I understand, they are very difficult to raise when young. I believe a member on here, UnstoppableJayD, had purchased 12 and only has 4 that survived.

The panda uaru have proven difficult to acclimate to aquaria. The other ones (amphlicoides or something like that) are much more available in the hobby and easier to breed. I had a pair for a short time that actually spawned once or twice in a community setting. I wasn't able to set them up in their own tank and eventually lost the female.

They were relatively easy to keep. Liked nice, clean water. Tore up veggies with a passion, especially romaine lettuce.

U fernandepezi are very difficult to get acclimated and keep long term, soft water requirements prone to disease etc. Strollo is correct i had 12 wild one inchers imported for me 5 arrived doa and 4 have survived and are doing well growing and an awesome fish in general if you like a challenge.

here is a pic of mine

Uaru amphiacanthoides the much more common uaru is a lot easier to keep but a very cool fish in it's own right I keep these also. I have a pair, they have laid eggs but no babies yet as they are in a community tank.

Both species are pretty tame as far as cichlids go, I have kept mine with angels different geos, sd etc nothing to aggressive. Very personable fish especially the captive born Uaru A. They will eat out of my hand . The biggest hint i can give you to keeping them is they are really vegetarians but will eat anything , like little pigs' so make sure not to give them to much meet and high vegie diet.

Great fish and very underappreciated in my opinion.

Thanks for the info.
I'll still plan on picking some up.
I think they were the fernand - ones.
Real dark blue with white spots.

What kind of diseases are they none for?
And is R.O. water a must To keep water soft enough?

They both have spotted juvie colors... Most likely it is not U.F, but U.A. You should be able to tell by the price.

U.F> juvies 60 to 80 dollars each
U.A> juvies 15 to 25 dollars

OK. What about food?
Stay away from meaty foods and make it more veggy foods
How about spectrum flakes?

These little guys are doing great. I
Bought 12 of them, 1 DOA and 1 died 2 days later. Must have been a parasite. Gill flukes I think. Breathing real hard.

Got them eating tons of veggys. And spirulina flakes.

I've got pothos in the tank and so far, they've left it alone. Lol
