The lack of spotting is what's most confusing to me. If the fish on the right in OP's picture had spots, I'd say fernandezyepezi without thinking twice. It's just that I've never seen a juvenile Uaru of either species that lacked spots. I've raised U. amphiacanthoides and U. sp. "orange" from tiny 1" fry and they've always had the flowered/spotted pattern that Cichlidgeek shows in pictures.

Uaru sp. "orange" is a whole problem all to itself, because they are not really a different species. They are a regional color variant of Uaru amphiacanthoides, and should be more properly named as Uaru amphiacanthoides "orange" IMHO. Top photo (is not mine) shows what my "orange" Uaru looked like when I got it (only had the chance to get one at the time). The bottom photo is a photo of him that I took shortly before selling him to a breeder. I suppose that a better argument could made that the OP's right fish is a "orange" Uaru than a Uaru fernandezyepezi...........due to the lack of spots!!!!! :D

EDIT ------ Kevin......have a look at this thread. Pay special attention to post #11. Ryan himself comments on the different pattern!!! :)

A little off topic but wow, those are some really nice looking Orange U. Amphs that Ryan has. One good thing that this disagreement has brought on is some nice pics of the Uaru. My Uaru's have developed some nice blue tints around the face that you dont see very often.
