Usually they dont hangout on top unless they feel secure, i guess adding the water lettuce made it them feel more secure.

i add a layer of DG around the base of any plants i dont want ripped out. My spotted raph is literally a bulldozer in my tank but even he cant seem to uproot plants that root into the DG. just some food for thought on diggers and plants
Decomposed Granite. looks similar to vermiculite but heavier and more gravel-like. i started using it when i was building custom vivariums for people and it is possibly the best substrate ive ever used for anchoring plants, submersed or terrestrial.
I'll have to check that DG out for possible future tank - interesting.

I haven't had my UJs rip out any plants but mine have been rooted for a long time.
My senegal liked to hang out at the top quite a bit, too. Interesting.

- if you want to try the vals it might be worth a shot in your LJ tank at the back and maybe try that DG. Otherwise you can hook some to your DW or sides of your tank.

Only problem having the val in my LJ tank in that most of my LJ hangs out in the back, i might try to add one more bag of garnet and buy a val gigantic.
Man they are digging that water lettuce. Reminds me of tree fort. Why is it illegal in Florida? Whyyyyyyymagpie since i put the water lettuce this are the changes that happened with my sons sen.
