UGF OR NO UGF

I gave 5 fish tanks. I use UGF with powerheads in all of them. I also have several Aquaclear 110s HOBS and Rena XP3 cannister filters. UGF is a good filter in my opinion. I would not trust Aquaclear 110 HOB or the XP3 cannister filter being alone filtering a tank.

But me being a independent thinker, I dont listen to all the hate about the UGF because I seen first hand how good the UGFs are compared to other filters.

You would take a UGF over an xp3 and an ac110?

Yea, I would. And you probably never used a UGF in the first place so you do know what you are talking about.

The surface area of the UGF is the size of your aquarium's floor. That is what makes it superior, the size. Also, make sure the gravel is not too thin or the UGF will clog. Also frequent cleaning with a gravel vac is necessary for a UGF to work properly. Also, using very strong powerheads with a high GPH with a UGF are a lot better than airpumps or weaker powerheads. A person would want a strong flow through the gravel so the water can go through the gravel where the good bacteria lives.

thanks for the laugh bro cuz that's just pure non sense. i don't need to hear hate on ugf to know there's a reason they're not commonly used. Defeats the purpose of aquarists getting together to share our knowledge and grow as a hobby if we're just going to stick to our cave man ways

UGFs have their place. If I were running a shop or breeding facility, maybe. Even then, I'd use a sponge filter before I'd go the UGF route. Can a UGF work? Of course they can. But saying it's superior to modern filtration is comical, at best.

morons have been keeping fish for their entire life, doesn't mean they're going about it the most practical or easiest way. it's your choice if you don't want to take advantage of the things that have evolved to make the hobby easier (or better) but there's no reason to say this is the way i've always done it so this must be the best way

as far as boiling your gravel if it is colored don't boil it it will take the color off and leave it in your pot

If it were me I'd lose it...

But, I have used reverse ugf's that worked pretty well. Purely a bio filter though so you'd still need to use something for mechanical..... subtrate stays clean but at the expense of floating detritus.....

And surface area of the floor if the tank is totally irrelevant. I promise you that a canister packed with a good quality bio material will outperform a perfectly functioning ugf... More surface area and consistent flow. Ugf's have tons of deadspots and the areas that get the most flow are the ones right next to the riser tubes.... substrate by the front glass will see very little flow. By design they work but are largely inefficient compared to a canister or hob....
